Recommend me: Tumble Dryer

Pretty boring topic I know ....

But it's pretty hard to find any decent and honest comparisons between units online - specifically targeting and speed of drying over anything else (say a full 9kg load of freshly washed towels)

We are running a 2year Zanussi unit right now (condenser) and whilst it's fine, it doesn't have a digital display nor any senior to auto switch off. I empty the water tray after each use and clean out fluff catchers on a similar basis. The condensing element also gets cleaned regularly. So overall the unit is working at full efficiency yet it still takes approx 2.5 hours to dry my load of towels/jeans etcetc

Since we have had a baby, the washer and dryer are on daily and so we just want something which is faster and cheaper to run if it makes overall.

Have heard/read about Heat Pump but also heard they take longer but are very efficient.

Whilst we have a condenser type today, we could take the traditional vented type - just would need to make a hole / ducting etc

Thoughts and real would inputs sought!

Thanks and happy snowey Saturday! (Rock n roll!)

I hope I can help, being a bit older we have had loads over time. The latest I have is a heat pump type. Very expensive but very good and cheap to run. It dries the clothes with dry air opposed to hot air.

It only uses 200-300 watts whilst running. I went for Siemens because they have a five year warranty opposed to Bosch which is two. A self cleaning condenser is also a must. It doesn't shrink clothes either.

Miele if money no object :).
Bought a washer only and while not cheap for a limited time they did a free upgrade to a 10 year warranty. Basic design but solid and proper built to last German engineering.

Previous machine I bought was a Bosch. I remember the delivery guys joking it had a "Made in China" label on the back. Although I have nothing against stuff made in China, it proved to be a PITA washer/dryer. Sometimes didn't like to spin then when I left it with tenants it had to be repaired twice in a year.

Not Meile, it doesn't have a self cleaning condenser. As I understand you have to remove it and wash it through just like to old condenser types.

Gas Tumble dryer, cost about a third to run compared with standard electric.

My last one lasted 26 years, White Knight.

Never knew about the self cleaning condenser - great to know. Thanks!

what have the drying times been for a full load of regular washing?

Unless they run on LPG then it wouldn't be an option. But I'll take a look into it.

Something wrong if a full load takes over 2 hours to dry, ours is a Hotpoint condensing type and it's far from being brilliant and would not recommend, but can't see it taking that length of time.
Daft question maybe but is your washing machine spin drying at maximum rpm?

You can always take out a month's trial on Which to see what they say, I have done that and cancelled it yesterday otherwise I could have looked for you.
It's only a £1 for one month.

Funny you say that, I haven't checked if the washing program we use always spins at 1200 or less. Just this morning I respan a load and now it's in the dryer for an hour - call if my acid test!

Have had White Knight gas ones in the past, whilst fast and economical, all of them seem to like to shrink things gradually..

Currently have a Samsung heat pump drier and it is amazing. Uses less than 600w and works perfectly. Not cheap at around £700, but worth the investment. It was one of the which best buys last year in the tests.

Last year I got a AEG heat pump dryer. I thought one if the better brands. An engineer came out 5 times in 5 weeks and finally agreed there was nothing wrong with the machine, it just didn't know when the clothes were dry enough. £500 and performed worse than my 10 year old dryer.
I exchanged it for a Miele and it's perfect and well built.
I've learnt it's worth getting Miele for all my white goods.

I also always look for a dryer with a drain pipe so I don't need to empty the tank.

AEG, Tricity Bendix, Zanussi and John Lewis are made by Electrolux.. Enough said??

We have Miele white goods and can't rate them enough, our washing machine is into it's 17th year and has a hard life, up to 3 washes a day in the summer and one wash a day the rest of the year. A friend has a Miele washing machine that's 26 years old and still going strong.
Pay your money, make your choice :)

Agree with the Miele comments - all of our white goods are Miele. They are a quality well made product.
