BMW is recalling nearly 14,000 cars in the Netherlands due to starter motor problems. The recall affects cars built between September 2015 and September 2021, a spokesperson for the car manufacturer reports. In the worst-case scenario, the problem could cause a fire. BMW therefore advises owners to park their cars outdoors until the starter motor has been replaced.
The starter motor problem is also affecting vehicles outside the Netherlands: 1.2 million cars are being recalled worldwide. According to the spokesperson, water can get into the starter motor, sometimes making it impossible to start. Overheating and short circuiting can also occur, posing a fire risk. BMW has not yet reported any incidents.
Owners of BMWs affected by the recall, which includes models such as the BMW 230i and, according to Reuters, the Toyota Supra, which uses the most powerful BMW four-cylinder engine (referred to as the 30i in BMW model designations), will be notified by their dealer. If some customers cannot be reached in this way, BMW will send a message via the car's system.
