Rebuilding 108´s

Has anybody got any tips?
I’m in the middle of retapping 7mm threads at the moment and don’t want to go through this process again.
I’ve been advised to wait for the new paint to harden for a week until I fit my new Goodyear f1 tyres.

I wanted to ask why bother splitting them? I resprayed mine without and they seem absolutely fine - just wondering what I am missing and why people risk sheared threads etc..

As you can see they were badly corroded when split and I wanted to do a thorough job back to bare metal,I didn’t snap any bolts whilst splitting.
Although not the most popular wheel I really like the classic 108 design,they will be ceramic coated before going back on the car and will be babied from now on.

If you don’t split them then it won’t be long until that hidden corrosion starts sneaking through again.
If you’re happy to make it an annual winter job to repaint then it’s not a big issue.

Mmm yeah, pretty bad underneath.

Luckily time wasn’t an issue and I had a spare set of wheels although i did manage to lose one of the titanium bolts,does anyone have a spare ?

Was it difficult to split them? And what was your technique?

I just undid the bolts with this and separated them with a big nylon mallet,it wasn’t very difficult considering they’d been together for 19 years.
I’ve read somewhere people tighten a little first to break the seal then loosen but I didn’t bother,you could try some penetrating fluid on the bolts and leave overnight also.
