Did they tell you what caused the problem or did they just fix it?

They said the light cluster was full of water! Yet, they still wouldn't budge on the excess saying even if they were to replace it under goodwill, I would still need to contribute £150 towards the repair. What a joke. They design something that's destined to fail and charge for replacing it. This sort of experience is making me feel like getting rid of the car.

From the replies I have seen they all appear to be the rear offside. Am I wrong?

Had an interesting response from BMW UK today. After receiving a cheque from the local dealer for £108 , I complained to BMW UK, they have said that the offer represented 80% of the cost of the part excluding VAT. My problem is the part cost £212.13 excluding VAT so someone at the dealer I suspect is not very good at maths or !!!!
In addition and if it helps anyone else I phonedanother local BMW dealer and found that they had supplied 6 rear offside lights to 2009 reg Z4 owners in the last 12 months. Even they admitted it was ahigh proportion considering how many they sold.

Looks like my n/s rear lights have gone :(
Need to take in to coopers next week but condensation in lens and rapid flashing.
They did change the o/s lens after the car was about 3 months old, now 3 years later and out of full warranty.
I did take out the extended warranty but have £100 excess, not happy to pay this - obviously,
Don't know how they can get away with this as it is very much a known fault
Any advice on how to approach coopers much appreciated...

I took mine back to the dealership and complained. They insisted that I get the repair done and pay in full before they would do anything. It was only after I had forked out £300 that the service manager applied to BMW for some money back but nothing was guaranteed but I had no choice. Hope you have better luck

Hang on... its a 28i right, so still new enough to be under warranty. There should be no paying out unless you smacked the lights with a hammer!

BMW should call these cars back. To get the light unit out, i've got it down to a 3 minute job. They should do a service exchange and get the units modified, if there really is a new seal kit as some have suggested.
Or do they just dry the units out and replace them!

The problem with the lights was on my 2.5i which I sold in January just gone . The 28i is the replacement but the issues re the rear lights on the old one are still on going with BMW

Just had a call from my local dealers who fixed the lights. Having checked there records they have agreed that BMW had offered me 80% of the cost of the replacement light, the cost was £212 and the £108 they sent me was £60 short. Moral of the story check with BMW to see what compensation they offered the garage and make sure they pass it all onto you. I know I paid £300 and only got £168 refunded but I don't think I am going to get any more. I hope others will do better and anything I can do to help I am happy to do so. I have sold that car now and bought a new one so hope this one doesn't have the same problem

So I took the car in to cooper bmw (as mentioned on 4th March) fully expecting an arguement. The rapid flashing had cured itself but there was still condensation in the lens.

Immediately told them that I was on the Z4 forum, that there were several discussions over the past 3 years and that it was a known fault. I also mentioned that there was a discussion relating to a "fix" issued by bmw. I didn't tell them that I had an extended warranty so as the issue would not be resolved by their insurance.

So, two hours later and a call to say that BMW have agreed to replace the lens part and labour without charge - going in next Thursday to be done

:D

The power of the Z4 forum - THANK YOU!

Well one of my replaced (for the second time!) lights has popped it's lens away from the seal and is condensed again.. Another call to BMW this week. Three sets of lights on this car now!

Good luck with that one. Keep us informed of the outcome.

I am still in an ongoing battle with BMW as they are treating everybody differently even though we all have the same problem.

Had both of mine replaced last week with a 70% Goodwill contribution (parts only) despite the car being almost 4 years old, with no warranty. The other 30% plus the 150.00 labour was paid by the dealership I bought the car from a few weeks earlier. Both of my clusters had split on the lower edge between the clear lens and the black casing. Quite difficult to identify but if I pushed the lower clear lens inward it would move about 2mm until it touched the black casing.

Visited BMW dealer today, suggested that the extended warranty would not cover the defect in the rear lens/lights. I was prepared to battle it but they said they were confident in any event they could get it done 100% under goodwill direct from BMW given my prior replacements of same... lets see.. waiting to hear back...

Sigh.. Just washed the car and as expected with the failed unit it now has suds inside it... Then I wash the other lamp and notice that one is now separating from its housing too... That was fine last week :(

Seems rear lamps and 296s are the e89s stalker as is sticky steering and failing roof motor of the e85s!

I have now registered a formal complaint regarding the decision making process. In my case first not covered then awarded 80% only to find others being awarded100% and finally only being given part of the award by the garage with no explanation where the rest went. Guess what, that was over a month ago and no response from BMW.So far I have been licky with the new Zed with no water in the lights but keeping a very close watch.
