Rear end Quad Conversion Progress.

I was told that the Z4M bumper wouldn't fit on an E85 (mines a 3.0)....so I bought an E86 bumper instead...

How well does the Z4M bumper fit?

Cheers

Julz

Whoever told you this is a moron. You can get e85 (convertible) and e86 (coupe) M's and the front is the same on all, 2l - 3.2l.

Looking good. When does the bumper go in for its new paint?

As soon as I have the funds to be able to pay for it. Not had a quote for the work as yet either.......so watch this space.

Also made a good find today. Had a drive to Hull to GFG Plastics just on a bit of a reccy and came away with a great bargain. Got some aluminium composite sheet which consists of a central core of plastic with thin aluminium sheet either side and then a coating of plastic on that. Very strong and fairly light, apparently used to make road signs etc. and it comes in various colour coatings. So I purchased some black with a view to making some fang protectors out of it. Just need to find a template or drawing for one now. Also got a strip of it to fab up an undertray extension piece.....When it is cut you do see the different layers of the sandwich but nothing a spot of paint won't solve..

Like the side repeaters, but sorry - it's a ' ' for the spoiler, but if you like it that's all that matters

Food for thought - another treatment of the rear:
Quad exhaust
Quad white spots
CF diffuser (no longer available and heavily modified)
white centre light
CF grey badges

Was looking at a quad exhaust conversion, off to see a local guy on Monday about that...

Trying to arrange to pick up a rear bumper from SK93 to have a play with to accommodate the quad and retrofit some kind of rear diffuser.
Do you have any closer/better pics of your rear end I could look at for ideas.. :o Ooooerrr missus.

This thread might help which is a write up of the entire project. (Clearly there were a few mods made later once it was on the car such as the rear lights, side skirts, blacking the boxes, etc.)

Can't believe it's 6 years since I did it..

Thanks for that fella. A lot of good info in there. Wasn't aware of the battery box issue though. If I were to use aftermarket/custom silencers which would be smaller I reckon that they would squeeze in,yes??

I was looking at an E89 rear diffuser and seeing if I could "Frankenstein" it onto the E85 rear..

don't think you'd ft anything in, but you'd have to do some measuring. In any event I wanted oem boxes so wasn't an issue.

There is zero room to squeeze anything past the battery box.. unless you're looking at about 1.5" diameter pipe, you'd need to make modifications.

Alongside the battery box is what I assume is a charcoal filtered air breather thingy that relates to the fueltank. what it is and what it does I don't know, but it exists, and takes up the remaining space between the battery box and the outer wing.

Myself, and a few others, get around this space issue with our quads, by running a pipe from the drivers side, round to the passenger side, BEHIND the battery box (so, along and directly infront of the rear bumper), with our exhaust tips coming out at a 90 degree angle from the passenger side "box".

Sorry didn't have time for the full reply.
Aside the battery box there is as mentioned the charcoal filter.
It's not needed and can be cut out and the pipe to the brake servo blanked off.

(In a bizarre twist I ran my new rear brake pipe inside the old pipe when doing the brakes last weekend as its across the car as it s a perfect carrier, so it has some use :) )

Anyway you have 2 options - the 't' pipe route or move/shrink the battery box.

or a 3rd choice...... EMP Performance did a quad conversion to ESPs Black 2.0i and im going to them in a few weeks once my rear //M bumper is finally sprayed, u can see from the pics below they dont do the traditional 90 degree behind the bumper style....

Quad exhaust DONE  (finally)
Awesome job done by EMP Performance in StAlbans today, sounds amazing, like a different engine compared to the previous custom box i had installed.

Cheers for the input guys. Lots to think about there. I had seen this and thought of something similar.

With one of the inlets into one silencer and the other across to the other one.

I take it you guys are talking about something like this...

Quad is a bit much on less than 300bhp, plus it's probably losing enough back pressure to lose performance. The change in sound can be achieved with a straight exhaust replacement, you don't need the quad pipe to get a good sound. That said it does look FAB.

There won't be any real noticable change in backpressure given the design of the rest of the exhuast, especially on the 90 degree style conversion, as it's a 'post box' change.

Its about look and style, not really performance. On mine sound is much improved, performance is actually up and weight the same with the OEM ///M boxes offset by lighter 'race' battery.

IMHO it's how the car should look given even humble Kia's and the like have dual systems these days.

Speaking of quad exhausts. Has anyone ever dealt with TopGear just outside of Doncaster? ?
Been quoted £350-£400 depending on tips chosen.

It is possible its how i have done mine. I made my own skinny tubular silencers (wrong name for them really as they are fecking loud!!) I had to relocate the fuel filter thing!! But i just put it the other side of the battery box as i dont have a great big exhaust there now.

Mine branches left and right just behind where you sit in the car. Relocating the fule filter thing was a bit of a faff. But i did do all of mine on axel stands. And that's not the easiest way of building a custom exhaust system. I saved about 10kg of the original system.

Sorry mine isn't a tee off system like your now planing.

I would say that's a bloody good price
