My 2013 2.0 needs new rear brake pads, Does this have to done by the dealer? Ive read somewhere that the ebrake has to be plugged in to the dealers machine release the pads??

cheers

Is it under warranty? If yes then dealer, if no then dealer, specialist or have a go with a winding tool you can get from eBay.

There are vids on youtube and info online about how to do this yourself.
How many miles on your car?
Ours is at 42,000 with the original brakes front and back.

You've done well.

We are at a similar mileage, still on the original set of front pads, but had the rear pads replaced a couple of years ago as they tend to wear faster than the fronts. I understand this is due to being rear wheel drive and the traction control mechanism.

We had this done by an independent as they specialise in BMWs and had the electronic gizmo to disable the electronic handbrake whilst changing the pads.

Ours is only the 23i, maybe these are not quite as bad with the rear pads, we dont exactly thrash around all the time either.
I tend to be quite a smooth driver and on my bike too.
I have over 20,000 miles on my 06 R1 and still on the original pads all round.
I dont see the point in throttle/brake/throttle/brake when just backing off earlier saves you from braking and can give a smoother line through a bend.

I think 390DIN gives the traction control on our ESS mapped 35i a harder work out :-) 30,000+ miles for the rear pads isn't too bad though considering.

I agree on being smooth though, I used to have an RSV Aprilia you just rolled off the throttle with all that engine braking.

Hey awwalker, I had my rears done at local independent that knew what they were doing - no need to see BMW and pay through the nose for fitting - and as far as I'm aware you won't invalidate the warranty if you use genuine BMW brake pads.

It was all done and dusted within 25 minutes!

My rear pads only lasted 15,000 miles :driving:

On a 35iS you barely get 20k miles on the rears ... :driving:

23i, fronts still fine at 58k, look like they will last about 80k.
Rears changed early due dust, but probably would have lasted about 50k.

There is a YouTube vid available https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8FaerB7OcyA just turn the sound down first, my 28i did 15K on a set of rear pads too
