Re spray

Hi ok I jus want some advice on here I own a 2005 3.0 Sterling grey smg Zed I’m gunna have the car completely re sprayed I have a quote and I’m happy to go ahead only reason re spraying is it’s got a few dings and scratches and I want it to be perfect so my question is really I got the quote and then the guy said what colour I love this colour with the red leather so thought I’ll keep it original as it was as I think it will also de value it if I go another colour but I do love the black sapphire on the facelifts so am I rite in my thinking that it will de value it if I change colour?

Would it not be more cost effective to simply buy a Sapphire black?

It’s not really why I was gunna re spray this is a rare car being a smg so I don’t want to part with it but want it to look amazing and atm the paint let’s her down I don’t give a colour change a second thought till the body shop guy said about colour now it’s made me ponder a bit

I think Sterling Grey is the best colour on pre face lifts. I’d keep it as original as I could.

That’s just me though.

I'd keep it the same colour as there will always be some parts that the respray cannot reach (unless you were to completely take the car to bits).
I like that grey with red.

Stick with the same colour, values are going up so keep as close to OEM as possible - take photos before the respray as well

Its not really rare, so changing the colour wont devalue anything given values of these and how many there are of them around. If somebody wants an original Z4 then they’d probably want original wheels etc too, so just spray it the colour you want it an enjoy is my advice.

Personally I'd stick with Sterling Grey as it's a good colour anyway!

And if I did go for black Carbon Black looks better to me than Sapphire Black. But then there is the issue of the door and boot shuts plus the under-bonnet areas which is another reason to stick to original IMHO.

Absolutely stick with the Sterling Grey. With the red interior it's definitely one of the best colour combos in my opinion. Guess I'm a bit biased though

Thanks for the advice guys I think sticking is the rite choice and the only reason I say it’s rare is the smg box with the colour combo it’s in.

Stick with original colour - I have just had mine fully resprayed as I dont plan selling anytime soon.
If you plan keeping also go for it - might take a while to recoup costs but its only money

I'd disagree with you. A SMG is rare. But don't take my word for it, take a look at the market. There's only one I could find for sale! Then factor in colours, mileage, service history, optional extras like sat nav, audio, seat colour, wheels, etc. If there aren't many on the market, you're not flooded with options.

I'd personally keep the colour the same. Just get the panels that need it done, properly. Alternatively don't overlook wrapping if you've got an itch for a different colour? Worth looking into IMO.

Yeah I’ve had a good think and I’ve come to the conclusion that original is best as in colour I won’t be seeking any time soon but want to keep the car’s value as best I can and I do love the grey I’m also gunna be putting 19 inch csl wheels one her

Rare doesn't always equal desirable.

I have read some on the SMG though never drove one. I can say this though, were I looking for another Z, I would not consider an SMG...but then again I wouldn't consider the auto either. But that is just me.

As to a color change, I agree with the majority here, keep the stock color.

Unless you are doing full bare metal respray I would keep the same colour. Only change colour if it is going to be done properly, i.e strip everything out including the engine and sand back to bare metal.

Instead of respraying, could you not get away with PDR (paint less dent removal) and paint correction (ie machine polishing)?

If possible, doing this will save you ££ and you will still have original factory paint on the car, which is more desirable than a respray come resale time.

Yeah I understand smg is not for everyone I’ve had a m3 e46 smg and I perfer them in sport mode there fantastic once u get used to them can change quicker than anyone could manually
