Yeah tried everything using my limited knowledge but it still says its to big -something i've havent had to deal with before :?

What software are you using? Picasa will do it and is free. Try this

Chaps, if you resize to 120 x 120 it's often still too big a filesize. However this website (and many like it) will do a good job of ultra compressing the filesize. As an example I just changed my avatar and the new file was 42kb. Running it through the website it is now 4k!

I joined today (LO) and has same problems but managed it in the end by doing the following:

Select the photo you want from your windows picture gallery - right click and select resize - select custom and then put in 120 as the size and apply. When you now go into edit your avatar in user CP, browse for the picture you've selected and changed as above and it should load up.

Yes, most of the time that will work. If it does not work the problem is the file size and that requires some image compression which requires either something like Photoshop or an online service that will do that.
