Quick Question on 108 Refurbs

Hi,

Getting wheels refurbed soon and calipers painted by the wheel specialist in Nottingham hopefully.

One thing they did say was that they dont split the rims, it's not practice to do so as they can't guarantee safety etc afterwards, so they will refurbish without doing this.

The chap said, everything would be ok e.g. powder coat and lacquer would be fine without splitting.

I wondered if anyone else has had there's done like this and had any comments? Also what your thoughts were?

They are also quoting me £40 for each caliper to be painted, and that doesnt include taking them off, just cleaning them in situe, temperature paint etc.

Few spots start appeared again on the outer rims (full set of 108 was replaced last year under new car warranty). Hopeless. :(
 
The guys in Nottingham did my 108's - I'm sure they may have told you they have done some before.
I was a little worried that they don't split the rims as I wanted the bolts to look good and still look like split rims after the powder coating.

I went for it in the end after they showed me a Boxter with split rims that they had done.

I am very happy - the powder coating is really good and covers the complete wheel including the bolts. The bolts still look like they are seperate.

I was very impressed with the service at Nottingham, the boys doing the work were very knowlegable and showed me loads of examples.

I painted my own calipers - very easy, they do need a touch up now however :?

Yeah i made a note of you, im in Peterborough by the way, where are you based, i might pop and have a look lol.

Was thinking Chrome Shadow effect. What did you get?

I also thought about doing calipers myself and painting the hub as well but only have a basic jack at home so it might be a bit of an issue me doing that.

I have been getting quotes to get my split rims refurbished.

Most places around Berkshire have been quoting £500 Inc VAT for fully sorting out the 108 including fully splitting them, blasting, powder coating both sections (or polishing if you so desire) and then putting them back together. No one will guarantee the successful separation of the rims from the spokes because they say the bolts can sheer.

The best quote I have is £280 + VAT from a very reputable company http://www.wheelrefurbishing.com/ for doing the whole lot. ( you have to take the wheels to them, rather than the car - if you take the car too it's another £50 or so for a week long storage. )

I did discuss getting the entire wheel coated like Ben. has done above, but I've been told that the wheels may never come apart again after the treatment. I haven't decided if this is a bad thing or not and am still thinking on it.

I'm based in the Coalville area officially but out in North Germany now so taking a look would not be too easy...
I had "Flash Chrome" on the wheels. The main inner rim is black, this gives it a nice dark look.

As for resplitting the rims - I didn't see any reason why I would want to do that. The powder coating is all over so no corrosion will get in - they are fully protected now.

Nice job. If it is not too impolite... what sorta money did you give for this work ?
 
They gave me a quote of: £376 INC ov VAT or around that. Plus £40 per caliper painted (heat resistant paint etc)
 
£40 a calliper, christ ill do for £20 a calliper - thats a bit high! id say do it yourself, if you can jack up a car and get the wheel off you can do a calliper, the materials wont cost you much over £20, hell even halfords sell a kit. i did mine, gold smooth hammerite and an afternoon.

the shadow / flash chrome looks nice, i was considering doing wheels in that too. could you not split the wheels for them and re assemble yourself, got to be the best way with the 108's, as you can then seal the join to avoid water ingress. plenty of posts on this forum about it.

I think I will do the calipers next weekend myself, get a mate to help etc. Shouldnt take too long. Then get refurbd after.

Will definately check out halfords for the paint :)

it is easy and on a nice day with a couple of beers it even better.

i just used hammerite smooth and the look perfect. i also did a DIY 108 refurb, check it out in the how to section :thumbsup:
 
guys if I've been quoted £280+VAT for the full job with the rims being taken apart, I think you are paying a high price at £370INC vat to not have them taken apart.. ?
 
I need to get my 108s refurbed (probably next year now... will have to live with them for a bit :()... but can't say I'd be happy for someone to powder coat the whole wheel without splitting; just doesn't feel right. Got to affect the value of them too, surely?

Going to do my calipers too... but what I really want to do is have them body colour (merlot red). Haven't figured out how yet! :?

You have to take them the wheels for that price. They will store your car for another £50 for a week if you can't split the car/wheels yourself.
 
Its a tricky one...

Split Rim - £280 + VAT = £329 + £50 (it has to be overnight, it takes days for them to do it) - 2 hours to get there, factor in petrol etc. Probably £50 in petrol

Right, on top of that factor in train ticket back and then train ticket there to pick up car...deep joy that's probably £50 + and £15 or so each way for Taxi to station

So a lovely: £500 ish.

or

No Split - £370 All INC + 1 Hour to get there, probably £30 in petrol (There and back in a day) so about £400.

Factoring in the costs, there is a big difference for me. I was advised by them that splitting can cause problems e.g. integrity, no guarantee on bolts etc.

There is another place called wheel genie: in Huntingdon just down the road from me, who quoted me £520 for a complete refurb includding splitting, 2 days, no cost for overnight and my brake calipers painted inc vat.
