Question on kitchens (not spam!)

Our kitchen has just been totally replaced, the complete supply and installation was carried out through Wickes (in Warwick) and the quality and service of the product and craftsmanship was second to none. Cannot praise everyone involved highly enough, total time to remove and replace 5 days, leaving only the decorating to do. Not part of the Wickes contract.
I have no connection with Wickes, first time we have ever used but they were recommended by a family member and from our experience would highly recommend.

Got ours done by Homebase a couple of years ago. Powder blue with solid oak worktops, AEG appliances. Sourced the floor and wall tiles separately elsewhere.

No complaints, good quality hardware and fitting.

Wow, some great looking kitchens there and food for thought. Thanks for the advice on all and offering of quotes too (FunkyMunky). Undecided on worktops at the moment but that quartz looks great OG. The walnut is an interesting option too as don't want to spend life oiling it when we come to rent our place out in a few years time.

Fitted vs freestanding appliances is an interesting consideration given the feedback on this thread and Bosch seem like the way forwards in terms of quality and reliability.

I'm hoping it's a fairly simple job given the size and layout of our kitchen. Here's a picture of one of the other flats in the block and how they've done it (apologies for low res). Would be similar to this but with gloss white units, white brick tiles and a grey slate floor.

So if there is anybody you know that could work in Blackheath/Greenwich area and is interested in quoting, let me know. Would be looking to do all of this in the next few months.

I fitted mine 8 years ago. Unit from MFI, everything else bought from anywhere and everywhere including the worktops as I needed 4 metre lengths.

In my view the bare cabinets are only a small part of the kitchen. Its the fitting, worktops, floor/wall tiles, lighting and appliances that really makes a kitchen look stunning.

Yeah, I want units that are good but not crazy expensive since we'll one day be renting it out. The appoances mid range for the same reason. Worktops is going to be more of a tricky choice as its longevity and robustness vs cost. My head is saying go wood (or for instance walnut) then be prepared to one day replace it when we move back into the place 20 years from now.

The words of wisdom we received before we bought were "make sure the doors and drawers and handles do not have in-built corners or recesses - they attract dirt and grease and are nearly impossible to keep clean" also "tiled kitchens are no longer fashionable" and " avoid granite work tops at all costs".
Best of luck!

We've been in our house from new in 1986 - SWMBO has been getting on at me for the last few months about getting the kitchen updated :( personally can't see why as its clean and functional albeit a bit eighties looking :?

Kitchen is a bit small ( about 12' square ) so not a great deal you can do to revamp it other than replace all the cupboard doors ( currently light oak ) , the stainless steel sink into a modern version and replace all worktops - spoke to a bloke in B&Q and asked for advice on how much it's likely to cost to install a new kitchen - according to him as a rough guide if the kitchen costs £4k then you'll pay the same again for the installation :!:

Having read all these posts it looks like Magnet might be a good option - is this ratio of installation costs accurate ?

Ps happy birthday Dav

^^ I would say that's inaccurate... my sister had a moderately sized kitchen fitted into her 3 bedroom house - the fitter was there 6.5 days but that included him plastering, tiling the floor and pretty much everything bar electrics.

£8k kitchen, approx £2k for fitting and all other trades including moving of / adding electrical sockets.

Installation costs totalled 25% of the overall price, included plastering, electrics, gas connection, plumbing minimal tiling, and full decoration.
Existing flooring used and before the work started we needed to have a new consumer board fitted (£350.00)
To me the installation costs were reasonable and we were exceptionally lucky in the quality of all the tradesmen used.

We are based in Colchester Essex but do supply and fit into London area. I would be happy to look at it for you and give you some advice. On the subject of appliances, you can't go wrong with any of the bsh brands. Neff, bosch or Siemens are all under that umbrella and made in same factories they are only cosmetically different so depends on which you prefer the look of and cost as they are all aimed at different positions in the market. Certainly stick to any of them brands in terms of good quality and value.
