Proper "Oh sh1t, what have I done ??" moment...

Lots of sales jobs around but very greedy companies either low basic and poor ote or totally new business with unrealistic targets !

I've been looking to jump for a while, after MD decided to scrap bonus/commission as he thought we should do the job just for the basic alone !!

good luck with the adventure, let us know how the quest goes

Why Malaysia? If I can be so bold.

It's strange. I did the same thing in a reverse manner. I was self employed as a contractor providing services to FedEx. But I was just barely a contractor and was really close to being an employee. I was sinking so much money back into my business, Working nights for ten years, Being away from my wife as she worked days. I just decided to walk away. I had no job to move to. I figured something would happen. It did. I was chatting at the local motorcycle shop. They asked what I was up to. Told them nothing as I had walked away from FedEx. They offered me a job on the spot. That move saved my sanity and my marriage.

bigdog, Mrs B is Malaysian - I always promised we'd go back one day, and I love the place. Simples :D

chester2000, sales on base only is just wrong if your base isn't up to much anyway... Keep looking, you'll find something better

Good luck Bing. I took retirement (slightly different I know) and then created my own company both for tax and VAT reasons. Then I contracted myself out back to the Government (UK) I had just retired from. So technically I am self employed and now work on an annual renewable (hopefully!) contract.

Certainly I have found more opportunities doing it this way and get to travel much more (but not always to exotic destinations) and I feel I control my own destiny and I can generally pick and choose the contracts I go for and the destinations. I can at contract renewable time renegotiate terms and conditions which generally means a decent annual hike in my daily rate (I charge on a daily basis). :)

If I can offer any further help or advice pm me.

I "retired" (for 2 weeks) from my job after 30 years, in 2008. And started another in a similar field. Wished I had taken more time off in between, but the opportunity was there, and with a 13 year old daughter, continuing work was unfortunately necessary.
Enjoy the next phase - it all works out.
The Malaysia option sounds great. I say give it a try.

I retired and never went back nor looked back! :D

It does present problems tho, somehow the weeks are much shorter than they were - and I enjoyed my work!

You could be a self employed sales contractor....

That's not something I have ever seen before... Seen a few people go into business as sales trainers, with their own methodology. Some of them rake it in from big corporates, but having been on the receiving end there are very few I have rated beyond a few gems here and there.

And thanks to everyone else who has commented - offers of assistance noted

Best of luck with the plan Bing
Slightly of subject just read the thread about Z prices in Singapore is it the same in Malaysia ?

Not quite so bad, but still very, very pricey. IF I ever have an ///M, IF the plan does to fruition and IF I still ave said ///M... Then I think I shall be importing it... Though even that could cost loads. Need to do some more maths

Mr Bing...sh*t man, only just seen this (too busy wrapped up in the heady world of family saloon probably).

Sorry to hear that big man and know how it can feel a bit [lot] up and down when it comes to redundancy. Happened to me twice and each time it's been the very best thing and led to the next rung up the ladder so you'll be fine. With a personality, sense of humour and ambition such as you're whats not to employ right?! Plus you're about to do something you probably considered a few times and look for a job somewhere else after so long. The difference is you're being paid to do it! Result!

The ///M will happen and I envy your long term plan of life abroad in Malaysia (Singapore or somewhere more leftfield?).

Not sure this is much I can do to help out but if there is anything you need let me know. Are you on LinkedIn? If so PM me and lets hook up. Maybe one of my contacts is of interest to you in your line of work. You never know.

If your skills allow then go self employed.

My 1 regret of my career is that I waited too long to do it. Always more comfortable with company cars, paid holidays, pension, private medical etc, etc. Big mistake.

You'll make far more money working for yourself than making someone else money for a salary.

Whatever you do, good luck.
I totally agree,
If you have the nounce to quit and go it alone , that says it all, I did in 1987 and never looked back - No more days off sick though LOL.
Good Luck.

inkey$, thanks - I shall PM you when home. It's all good, I chose to do it, so the up/down feeling is all about whether it was the right choice, leaving loads of good friends and colleagues etc., not about 'losing' my job as that's not what has happened. Got a night out tomorrow with a bunch of people I joined with as grads back in 1995 - a nice circular happenstance, and the first reunion I have ever wanted to go to :D

SUUNTOBOB, cheers :D

Im er rather late to this myself...

good luck with it all and hope it all works out...

I've only ever been on the other foot - 2 redundancies not of my choosing, thankfully never been out of work for long though!

is that a red ///M I see approaching :D

You only live life once buddy, work hard, play hard, drive hard and most of all .. think but dont worry.

Just been reading through a few of you replies blue. Wise head young shoulders well done you and your parents.

Good luck Bing  I'm sure you'll look back on this moment in a few years and think "thank god I did that when I had the chance, it's been the making of me". Fortune favours the brave.

I have a similar sort of dilemma at the moment that I'm wrestling with.

Thanks guys, just got back from a night out with the chaps I started my employment with 17 years ago. Had a great night, very pi$$ed, now going to bed' no more posts from me tonight :D
