Some great progress so far Martin.

Do the M slat covers just clip onto the standard grille? If so please PM me as I'd like them!
Yes they do. Not sure I kept them though tbh. I’ll check.
Morning Mr T.
Found the covers but two of them have damage and crazing on the bottom edge. The plastic seems to go brittle.

[ref]enuff_zed[/ref], nice work! Always hlad to see that instead of being broken for parts or scrapped a car is brought back to life for someone to enjoy. And if someone young can learn new things in the process, even better

Thanks for letting me know Martin. It was just an idea, but I suppose I could probably find some online if I wanted.

Which you don’t, you really don’t

Still wondering - I wouldn't consider doing it if I didn't have an M!

Rear shocks replaced. Old ones were originals. When compressed they stayed there. And the left side fired oil out the top when I pushed it in!
We also found a slight issue with the cup washer that sits between the top mount and the bump stop.
See if you can spot the problem.

Bit more progress made, working around Storm Bert (well basically just a bit damp and breezy over this neck of the woods).

Top cover gasket replaced. Old one must have been the original. Took over an hour to tap out all the bits of solid seal from the grooves in the cover. Luckily it came away with the cover; when they stay on the engine it's a nightmare trying to prevent any bits going down the oilways.
While I was doing that, Ed binned the old coathanger-style aerial and fitted a 'whubby'.
New set of wiper blades went on too.
The wipers have been behaving oddly. First up is intermittent, second up is also intermittent, and fully up is normal speed. No fast wipe available.
Tried swapping in another switch: no change.
So now we have a replacement GM5 fitted, but not able to test yet as the battery is still off while the drivers seat is out.

Then jacked the front up, wheels off and soaked the suspension bolts in Plusgas. Left it all to soak in.
Both seats out and steering wheel off, carpets hoovered and shampooed. Seats cleaned and recoloured.
While they were all out we did the GM5 and also swapped in another EPS motor as this one fails intermittently. There is significant play in the lower steering UJ and we think this may be upsetting the Steering Angle Sensor and that is in turn upsetting the EPS, however, with the seats out and steering wheel off, and a spare motor to hand, it made much more sense to swap it out rather than have to go back in later.
Passenger side is now all back together and the drivers side will follow as soon as the carpet dries.

Not much left to do now really. Front suspension to replace, along with the intermediate steering shaft.

Then I think we may try an MOT, giving us a bit of time to sort any issues that crop up before then prepping it for sale.

No one spotted I was being a f**kwit did they?
The wipers were functioning exactly as they should with the car stationary!
I was seriously overthinking it!
Checked out the others on the drive and all do exactly the same thing.

I'm not keen on doing the front struts with Ed around, even though I now have a proper hydraulic spring compressor, so I cracked on and changed the front suspension today.
Ran out of daylight before I could swap out the steering shaft so that'll be the next rain-free day.

Sounds like a fun project. Like building yourself a huge model kit and breaking even at the end of it :) I would imagine some people would have happily contributed parts in exchange for joining in and learning some useful mechanic skills to care of our own cars. Like doing some sort of open university course :)

Years ago I ran the Kings Lynn Capri Club. In the summer we used to do food'n'fix days. Some of us would muck in and sort out people's cars while those less mechanically minded would run the bbq, bring cakes, beers etc. Would be fun doing something similar.

[Edit] Sorry, just thought, I'm derailing the thread a bit. Nothing to see here, move along, move along.

I'll just leave my register of interest here
Oh that would be a brilliant idea. Depending on time and place I would definitely try and go to something like that. Even if my car didnt need anything doing I'd love to watch experts diagnose and work on other owners cars. If you charged a token amount it could go towards the running of the forums.

South Devon would be a great place this, It's nearly always sunny down here in the summer.
