Project Midnight….

When I bought my first Z4 back in 2019 I was choosing between a Monaco Blue 2.5si and a Stratus Grey 2.5si, the grey car presented better and had better history - so head ruled heart and I bought the Stratus.

Since then I’ve bought and sold a further eight Z4’s, some of which have been beauties, which makes this one number 10.

Over the last 4 1/2 years I’ve put up a number of wanted adds for Monaco/Midnight/Carbon, and I’ve even PM’d Monaco owners on here asking if they want to sell… hopefully I didn’t offended anyone.

I’ve been to see a few over that period, but none were for me.

A car was listed on auto trader on Saturday evening and I contacted the seller immediately. I Drove 90 minutes to see it on Sunday morning, agreed a deal, drove home to get straight on the train to go back to pick it up and drive it home in thunderstorms on Sunday evening :dizzy:

The seller seemed really genuine and had spent a significant amount on routine, but essential, maintenance at RBM. He’d also replaced tyres with quality Michelins, had the cam cover gasket replaced etc. I would say ‘improved it in his tenure’.

It did come with some ‘interesting’ features, which the seller assured me were on the car when he bought it - I’ll put a few photo’s up 8)

It comes with almost complete service history and a massive wedge of invoices - always encouraging :)

It’s fair to say the one of the previous owners liked gadgets, badges, lights, stick on trim and door protectors - with more ‘Mpower’ the better. So it was a case of seeing past all that…

As it stands the project is under way, everything in the photo’s, with the exception of the DRL’s and the ‘mini-canons’ on the front bumper have gone.

There are some jobs to do;

Remove DRL’s and replace the front lower grill
Fully correct the paintwork and ceramic coat the car
There are a few car park dings - I’ll be on to the dent man
There are a couple of minor spots that could do with paint
The shocks are original, they’ve done 82k and so the ride is crashy on poor road surfaces - on the look out for new ones already, will also order brand new spring plates and rubbers etc from BMW Cheltenham, might go with eibach springs.
The seats need a good clean firstly, but almost definitely removing and refurbishing with furniture the clinic kit.
Loose wire on the seatbelt circuit so the car sometimes thinks the passenger seatbelt isn’t plugged in when it is
Work out how the hell the dash cams work and how to download footage
I’m sure there’s other stuff which escapes me now…

I will update as I go

This might actually be ‘project keeper’

Congrats on the new project! Sometimes certain cars just get under your skin, and you know you need to scratch that itch at some point

Good job looking past the -ahem- taste-sensitive accessories :tumbleweed: It’d be interesting to see a few pics of the entire car!

I’ll get some photos of before/during/after the paint correction stage.

I’ll probably get of few as it is over the next few days

Blimey 10 Z4s since 2019 and in that same space of time I am on my first.

It’s not as bad as it sounds, one of them was owned by my Mrs

Oh...so just the 9 then. Sounds quite normal when you put it like that!

"Project keeper"? Who are you kidding mate?
I said that to my neighbour at the weekend about the Type R. He just looked, rolled his eyes, and said "for a month".

It’ll take me longer than a month to get it how I want it, plus I avoided calling it ‘project keeper’ in the thread title as that would have been tempting fate :D

I’ve also realised, even after updating the suspension, that E89’s are a bit too modern and civilised for a weekend toy car for me. Great as a daily though.

I had a bit of a rush of blood to the head and almost bought a TTRS… but then came to my senses. There was also a 2.5ltr supercharged MX5, an old school accord (the square one) with a K20 engine swap… but they were both manuals and I really needed the next toy to be an auto. I’ve looked at all sorts, and then this popped up on Saturday evening.

I might surprise you with how long I keep this one, …I might even surprise myself, my mrs and my kids

Past history dictates otherwise

I really like the look of your Carbon dash trims… If I bought something like that it would be a sign of commitment :driving:

Blimey. The Z4 is only the 6th car I've had in 30 years of driving.

I'm quite taken with those door buffers tho.

They are in one piece if you want them, add at least 50bhp :o

I’m a beginner, lots of people on here have had many more Z4’s than me :tumbleweed:

I’ve got this too…. If you’re old- school Batman

Yep, then sold onto some lucky guy who will have nothing to do to a lovely zed

Thank you, although might take a little while to build momentum as other priorities are in the way. In no rush with this one though

Got any better photos of Project Midnight? All we've seen so far are close up issue shots...not that anyone is complaining [other than me]

Here it is… sleepy eye’s - forgot to mention them, also to be removed in due course

In all seriousness, I’ve been working on the Mrs Kia Rio the last couple of evenings as she’s selling it… so getting it ready for her.

Once that advertised I can get stuck into this one properly and get some decent photos of it up.
