Errrm.....surely that isn't an example of the finished paint? I thought I was looking at wet primer? The paint job on this car will make or break it. I understand that most of the fabrication is finished and you might now feel in a hurry to get it on the road. But dont rush the paint. Get it right the first time even if it adds a few weeks to your completion date buddy.

The paint has just been put on too quickly in bad conditions..

It can be flatted back to get rid of the heavy orange peel,a lot of work though..

Im still sat squarely on the fence here, its either gonna be stunning or absolute gash..

Didnt spot that Gav..

That looks like either a reaction and its lifting the paint,or its a run thats had paint lathered too quickly and its pulled that paint off the bumper. It also looks like the paint has gone very dry where it enters the vent.

Bad prep will cause both..

Looking at that bumper in the picture provided,it wants knocking back and repainting....Its awful..

As I've said before I'll wait to see what rolls out of the shed before comment.

Certainly coming along, but imho having painted more than my fair share of cars and panels/parts, that paint needs flatting back to a decent surface and starting again. Just looks badly applied and limited by photos seems wrong thickness and air conditions and possible reaction with underlying layers/runs.

Easier to start again than days with grades of paper.

I have been watching this thread for a while and I kind of respect the guys determination to do it, but think the finishing does not really match the expectations he (or us) had for the project.

Personally I think the form was a little ambitious for a diy project and feel there is just too much going on around the rear quarters with no resolution to the panel junctions. However, beauty is in the eye of the beholder (lots of people put wings west kits on jap stuff 'in the day' and thought they looked ace...) and if you like the shape, it's up to you. I do think that the final fit and finish of everything really lets it down though.

I think some input from a body guy would have at least improved the final finish and would have sorted some of the poor blends of form. It's brave doing it all in steel, but really for this sort of application he would have been better modelling up the shape in P.U. foam board and skinning in grp. You could go on to make moulds to produce well finished bolt on panels and do a proper job of it, but it's all a bit too late now really.

I would strongly recommend getting a price from a local body shop to block out the basic shape again and resolve the finishing issues if you really want to make the best of it. It doesn't have to cost a fortune and decent paint can make all the difference.

Or rattle can matt black the lot and only drive at night.

As said before by lex I believe. He doesn't seem to add much/any description of some of the pictures. So for as long as we know, the pictures are of the first attemp at the paint to give us a rough idea of what it will look like. Maybe he's already done with the new paintjob. :)

I'd imagine brad wouldn't come this far just to have a bad paint job and ruin it, or like i said and maybe he's redoing it. Let's give brad the benefit of the doubt atleast.

A POST TO CLEAR A FEW THINGS UP

Hi all,

Thanks for the stream of comments that have taken place over the last 48 hours, I've only really just now logged in to read them all and catch up with you all and I feel a lengthy post is required to explain and maybe clear up some of the misconceptions that are spreading regarding the 'paint work'.

Firstly let me clarify that this is NOT the 'finished' paintwork. I can't believe some people think that this one day spray job is regarded as the final thing.

Spray jobs... (good ones) cost upwards of £2,000-£3,000 depending on the finishing work that's required. I do not have the capital (at least not for a few weeks) to be able to make an outright payment of that kind of money for a spray job and I am still in the final decision process of who is going to be the team to finish her off.

I've seen a few posts about how people are 'cheated' by me? i'm not going to lie that's extremely hurtful. I did not ask for the break in to happen and neither did I come crying to you for donations to the project. The fact that people did make contributions to the build brought me to tears and was one of kindest things a community of people have done for me and I can never really thank you all enough. I posted around page 16-17 of this thread the total cost of losses for the theft which total exceeded more than the money that was raised by the forum so I was still horrendously out of pocket.

The donations never sat in my account for more than 2-3 days and were used instantly to snap up the alloys you now see and help towards a new set of coilovers.

There is still a lot that needs to be done to this car and I will admit, it's draining and I don't often find the time to sit down and explain to you guys each and every minute detail that goes into getting the car to look how it is. I like to sit down at my laptop upload a few pictures for you all and crack on with my day, I do however want to add a little more depth to the posts I do so I shall attempt to explain each picture in more detail from now on if that will mean a lot to you guys.

To summarize, this paint job is what I would call a 'protective layer' to show what the car might look like in WHITE because I wanted to make sure that I was choosing the right colour, this white paint cost me £20 from the back of a truck lol.... and only took us a few days to apply in a damp, cold, environment.... hardly the conditions required for a thorough finish worthy of a show car. This means that The bodywork is protected and cannot be ruined by weather and what not in the weeks that I save up for another big financial outlay to get the car 100% finished.

Hope everyone is happy with my reply.

Ehem.. I don't want to be the one to say I told you so buuuuut... I told you so I told you so! :poke: 8)
Nice post brad I think I speak for everyone in saying thanks for the update, and thanks in advance for taking a little more time out of your day to go into more detail of each picture from now on.

I'm sure not just for us but for you that your probably working many hours to rush the proccess with the whole money issue. So I'd imagine days are basically work get money work on car lose money post occasional updates/pictures sleep and repeat. :D

Atleast when you do have an update its always with photographic evidence!

Keep up the work brad.

Well done Brad, never had any doubts - you don't owe anyone anything here.

...But we're all excited to see the finished product! We should aim to get you along to the national meet or something :)

Personally a big fan of the body design, i hope it comes out as you wanted it. I watched Chop Shop on TV last night before Top Gear and it made me think your car was 10x better (and also realise the amount of work involved!). I'd seriously consider whacking a V8 in it though if you want it to go like it looks.

I still feel this is one of the best £10 I've spent :)

Looking forward to seeing the finished beast :driving:

x2, take your time Brad. We'll all be waiting patiently to see the final reveal...personally I'd rather wait to see it in its finished glory, with a huge write up of the process. Anyway, Duxford car show will be a good one

You arse lickers!! :P

You brought this on yourself Brad by putting up pics that you know will look shite and get negative comments.
All it needed was a bit of a text saying whats going on. I for one am interested in the process not just the 'final reveal' so updates are very much appreciated.

I wouldn't have donated if i didn't want to, I just think you should never have a 'finish date' as people get disillusioned when it keeps getting put back (as I'm sure you are).

Maybe 'cheated' was a bit harsh, and for that I apologise.
