Project car for my apprentice (M54)

As some may be aware, the little lad across the road from me is mad keen on Z4s and has been helping me out with the ones I'm working on.
Edward is only 9 but turns up in his own overalls and is already experienced in changing shocks, oil changes (hates the smell of diff oil  ), vanos repairs disa valve upgrades and many other little jobs.
Earlier this week his dad approached me with a proposition. He had found a 2.2i which needed the usual overhaul stuff and either a new rad or expansion tank. It was up for £1500.
He proposed to buy it and with my help Edward would source all the parts, fix it up and sell it on hopefully for a small profit.
Sadly he was too late and the car was gone.
However, if we can find another one similar, he is still very keen to do this as it will be a fine education for Edward, how to manage costs, how to search for parts, how to use Realoem, how to plan jobs etc. I also take the time to teach him how each part works, not just how to replace it.

I think it's a great idea, but of course suitable cars are few and far between.
So I thought I'd stick this ad up just to see if anyone can help out. I'll ask you all to keep your eyes peeled and let me know if anything crops up.

I'm looking forward to Project Ed's Zed.

I smiled reading this, fantastic idea and I hope your search goes well

Ed will have a fully sorted ///M sitting on the drive waiting on him turning 17

Not sure if it'll go that far, but if he can turn a little profit whilst learning some basic engineering principles it'll do him good.
May also pick up a bit of maths, spreadsheets etc. too.
TBH, he's a bright lad so doubt he'll end up a mechanic, but I've dealt with so many design engineers who have no practical experience that if he went don that route it would be a huge benefit to him.

And on the flip side, it makes it fun for me too.

What a lovely idea.

Will keep an eye out for any possible candidates, and update here.

Is there a minimum/maximum criteria to operate within (i.e. cost should be <£XXXX, has to start & drive etc)?

Cracking idea- I'll keep scouring my usual places there will be something out there!

I would suggest that he'd be looking at a max of £3k all in to buy and fix up.
I realise that is a tall order but fingers crossed there'll be something turn up.

His dad does have access to a trailer if needed.

In the years to come I am sure Ed will look back and appreciate his kind neighbour. Great idea Martin

Hi enuff zed

I have a 2004 2.2i coming up for sale at the end of May. Its black with red leather interior, 95k miles and mechanically very sound.
The down side is the bodywork has several scuffs and small dints, the drivers seat has a scuffed area near the top, the wheels need refurbishment and the air-bag warning light is permanently on due to an error by a local garage😞
It will have 12 months mot, a full oil service and several receipts of recent work done and could be described as a "doer-Upper".
I live in Cumbria and if you are interested or want pictures contact me on 07788835148.
Regards

Sorry, but have you thought this through? It's a silly idea.

At the moment you have free labour working on YOUR cars, go down this route and You become the free labour.

Actually, it's brilliant, hope you find a suitable car. Is he on here? Hope so as our resident 9 year old seems to have disappeared lately........

I disagree! Its a great idea for me. I get to carry on as I am already, but without any costs :D

Trouble with him joining the forum is we'd need a NSFE category.

This is fantastic and very generous act you are doing for this young man. Just a thought as we have probable several hundred members on this site. If there is a way to set up a fund to help this young man's Dad buy a decent car for his son to work on and learn. I would be happy to contribute. A cut off amount can be set say 3k. And when as stated the car is sold hopefully for a small profit the son can put this towards his future educations. The logistics' may not be possible and not sure if this is possible or even allowed on this site just posting for member thought.

A starter for 10! 🤷🏼‍♂️🤷🏼‍♂️🤷🏼‍♂️
Is this the one that 'just' needs a bumper and a bit of paint?
I've looked closer and there's more to it than that. But I do appreciate you looking for me Brian.

OK, I'll try to be a little more specific.
Whilst I'm not averse to swapping panels if required, I think mainly we want to be looking at the mechanical side of things: engine, suspension, roof motor etc. If possible an M54 as that is where my experience lays, for the first one at least.

That is a very generous gesture, thank you.
I have to admit that I'm never 100% comfortable in doing this kind of thing as it feels like asking for charity when there are many more deserving causes. It's not as if it would be simple to pay back the donations from the sale either is it?
So I think, lovely idea though it is, I would probably say we would decline.
However, when it comes to looking for spares, if anyone feels they can offer a little discount to further Edward's education then that would be appreciated.
At the moment I have followed up a couple of leads (thanks Barry), but nothing is forthcoming.
It'll be a patience thing I'm sure, and in the meantime he can still help me get this 3.0i sorted.

If and when this project gets off the ground I will start a proper project thread for it.
Edward is already planning how he can join the convoy to the next one of Jock156's meets.

I really like your apprenticeship programme so I hope you manage to find the next project.
