Project 2006 Z4 - restoration (Enjoy!)

Only time I remove my deflector is when I have the hardtop on, otherwise you have no way of cleaning the inside of the rear screen. When the soft tops on, it's not an issue, so just leave it in. I prefer the illusion it gives of a darker rear window.

My car has the OEM wind deflector but not the boot lid mounts?
I bought mine from ECS tuning because I had a replacement soft top motor and insulation coming from them at the same time, so no difference in shipping. The damn things falling out until I was told you really have to push them in firmly to fit them correctly, and now they're spot on. Don't use them much but I just wanted the option available if I needed it.

Thing is I'm not sure I'd use em much either - I never take the wind deflector off. Some say the mesh restricts rear visibility in the winter but can't say I've noticed.

Same here, never take it off. I've also read it can affect the operation on the auto dimming rear view mirror - not noticed that either

Does it come off?

I just thought I had a dirty rear window.

You've inspired me to do a restoration job on my coupe I've had it about eight months and done 12k miles in it already. So rather than depreciate the value too drastically I'm retiring it from daily duties and I'll start giving it a makeover like you are doing. Great work it's been interesting to read and as I said earlier an inspiration.

I've got the new daily driver now so I'll slowly start making progress on the coupe. It's the start of the big clean today. I'll post a link to a thread once I've got some updates. It'll end up a bit of a show queen as I've got my mx5 for spirited driving duties and I'm going to have the coupe as my show and shine type car.

Not had mhch time to work on my z4, but its tucked up at the back of my workshop.
Anyway, i wanted a wind deflector and all associated hardware (hoops, boot brackets etc), so contacted
Mizzy, at bmw parts and servicing,

whalley road,
clayton le moors,

Tel: 01254230033,

Fantastic service, and Mizzy say if anyone needs any bmw advice, they can ring me.

Photos to come, but paid £150 for everything.

As you'll have the new hoop covers to install, they'll be easy to paint...... red, before you fit them :)

Only things that are going red are the calipers!! Well, some underside components may be, ......perhaps.

Was going to ask if you had any red bits, but sounded a bit wrong!

Andy.

May be a possibility that my tyre sizes are wrong! Gonna check tomorrow.
Can someone confirm - are the wheels the same size front and rear?

Andy.

Aren't they supposed to be staggered? 18 x 8 front, 18 x 8.5 rear ?

Been driving the Z4 around for a few days and it is gorgeous in the sun with the top down. I told my Wife I was having an affair with a black girl! hahaha. Me and my z4 are one!!
Anyway, popped into stratstone BMW for the under wing plastic foglight access panel that was missing

Here's a photo of the view from the parts dept chair while I was waiting!

Bought 4 plugs for about £10 each. NGK iridium

Notice the aftermarket coil here
tf7RxQE.jpg

Im going to scope the waveforms to the aftermarket one and the OE ones and post the results. Be interesting to see how they compare.

Changed the air filter, and the box underneath had loads of sand in it. Blew it out with compressed air and sandblasted my face. Bloody hurts.

Also cleaned throttle body out round the butterfly but it was hardly dirty.

Taking it to the seaside tomorrow so should be a nice day. Taking my youngest son Adam with me, whos 13, and he said its a sexy car!!

Andy.

Oh, for the spark plug aficionados out there, here are the old plugs

Oh, and for completeness, here's the old and new air filters

Finally got round to fitting my wind deflector!

Look at the bloody state of the pollen filter

9MgxYMS.jpg

and the dead leaves left behind in the slot

sEgxa8T.jpg

If someone cant be bothered to service the pollen filter, doesn't bode well for the rest of the car does it?!! :headbang: :(

Oh, Im gonna change the clutch, 'cos its annoying and I want to do it anyway,...for fun!!

Andy.

Just out enjoying my car and look what popped up on my dashboard in the middle of the M1
al0JpG8.jpg

So, out with the verus and lets see what comes up...

yQ56c9o.jpg

So its a VVT fault, cat code and immobiliser issue.

Interestingly, over the last couple of days I have turned the key and nothing! Not even a click. Couple of tries later, and it starts as normal. So the immobiliser fault code makes sense.
Back to verus and into the immobiliser data..

j1uwTYn.jpg

Typical! The data was absolutely fine. So the intermittent start fault is not present.

Also noticed that it was key 3. But ive only got 2. So, i swapped keys over and here we are

hX17Si3.jpg

So that is key 2. What the hell happened to key 1?! No doubt it was lost at some point.

Onto the VVT fault. Back to verus, and into actuator tests for the inlet and exhaust solenoids

Heres a screenshot of the inlet solenoid actuation procedure
0rO43Ki.jpg
Which did absolutely nothing!

Then the exhaust solenoid and the engine stumbled around for a bit. So focus goes to inlet one.

Both solenoids out and activated on the bench and blown through with compressed air

5ubOE66.jpg

Both seemed to work okay on the bench with nothing obvious.

And back on the car
64d8IJ9.jpg

Cleared the codes and driven and nothing has come back yet.

So onto the CAT code. Back to verus and into EOBD and heres what appeared
IVTrCzH.jpg

This code only appears after about 10 mins on the motorway, Nothing when being driven around town.

When I first bought the car, there was an ignition coil in the door pocket, and number 3 cylinder one has been replaced. I wonder if the car was misfiring for quite a time and has contaminated the CAT.

Ran out of time, but live data when driving tomorrow of the 2 post CAT sensors.

Poor car. Wants some love.
Andy.
