Production Begins ....

Z6W is no great shakes... as it's pants anyway (reports of overheating and phones not charging anyway).

6P1 is an interesting one. Depending what has been done, it could be the case that a semiconductor has been changed for an alternative but is not yet supported by software, hence the chances that some aspects may be re-instated. Although having said that, details on that front are sketchy at best.

Also under 6P1 is looks like you lose the ability to bluetooth pair multiple phones concurrently and also loses the Wifi hotspot.

Who really knows though? There's a lot of talk without confirmation at the moment.

The one to watch for touchscreen delete is 6UX - and the G29 seems to be exempt from that at the moment. (From what Im seeing, it's 5 series that is getting the hit at the moment)

Told before Christmas that it was due week 4 (next week) now week 7 (14/02) although “it may come in sooner”. I doubt that somehow as, if as advised yesterday it’s in the paint shop, still quite a bit of assembly still to be done.

Mine is also scheduled for week 7 delivery, but I will defer to March 1st for pick-up probably.

Not too worried about the multiple phones, just means the wife will have to do without hers while we are driving! The Wifi hotspot not too much of a worry in itself, although putting 2 and 2 together maybe that is why Over The Air updates won't work until the fix is in place.

Might well depend on engine/trim - my 20i Sport has 'touchscreen deletion' (6UY) listed, according to a VIN decoder and speaking to BMW customer services the other week. Haven't confirmed the touchscreen is actually missing yet because the car's stuck somewhere, having arrived in the country before Christmas but not yet got to the dealership...

Russ are you sure 6UX is the Touchscreen Delete? I thought 6UY was Touchscreen delete - I've read somewhere (can't remember where!) that there is a delete affecting the touch functionality of the iDrive controller, wonder if that could be 6UX?

Couldn't say for sure.

Oh whoops, you're quite right there - 6UY is what's showing on mine, corresponding to the touchscreen deletion. Thankfully no 6UX which is removing the touchpad on top of the iDrive knob; that would be unfortunate as I've got quite used to using that on my current machine! Have just edited my reply above so as not to muddy the waters...

They stack shells until enough warrant a colour change in the paint shop Peter, assembly takes 24hrs from a roll of sheet steel to a finished car showroom ready. Simply a matter of logistics if that's the right word.

Thanks for that, clearly as an Oldie (born at the end of the first half of the last century!) my understanding of current car manufacturing processes is well outdated. Always pleased to learn something new!

I did a stint at Toyota back in the day Peter, quite eye opening the sheer speed and clinical way cars are mass produced. It's the small number of niche cars like the Z4 that means the delivery dates swing with the wind, paint is the major influence on a cars build for the reason I've said. High volume cars, Avensis for example, are ordered in high numbers meaning it's only a few days before enough shells are ordered to warrant a paint swap, so you can have a new car in a month or less from order.

hi baljemmett - can I ask which VIN Decoder you used? I've tried a few this week but non seem to work with my VIN.

I found mdecoder.com was the first to give me useful information; I'd been trying bimmer.work every few days for a couple of weeks and getting nowhere, then tried mdecoder on a whim one night and there it was. That was about a fortnight after production, but I don't know if it would have shown up sooner had I tried. I've just noticed that bimmer.work finds my car too now (a month later) so there's obviously some delay or caching of failed lookups going on somewhere.

Probably worth trying both as there seem to be some minor data quality issues; mdecoder reckons I have a 0-cylinder engine producing 0hp, and bimmer.work is missing names for one or two option codes.

Thanks baljemmett that's really useful - MDecoder is giving me a lot of info for my VIN, although I see what you mean about some Data issues as it thinks mine is a Left Hand Drive!! But apart from that, all the options are listed pretty much as expected.

As of today car has moved on to status 8200 (Fully built and Release to Carrier for transport to port). Quick check of deletes still only shows:

6P1 Wi-Fi functions, temporary deletion & preparation for Remote Software Upgrade
Z6W Deletion of Wireless Charging

So I'm as confident as I can be that it should arrive with a Touchscreen. :D

So do you know what 6P1 really means? Reactivate Apple play down the line?

Only what I've picked up from forums etc - my understanding is that wireless Appleplay, Androidauto, Wifi Hotspot, etc are unavailable until a software fix is released sometime in 2Q 2022. Because over the air updates are also affected by this, I guess the car may have to be taken into a dealer to get this fixed.
