Private Registration Query

I wanted to see what the plate I was thinking of purchasing would look like on the car, my friendly local garage got the plate made up for me on the proviso he could have it back if I did not complete the purchase and destroy it. I liked how it looked so purchased it and he got the rear one made up. sorted. some of the ireland based companies dont require any documentation and will still make "show plates" as well as legal ones. best to have a set of each to swap at mot time or if you get pulled by the traffic cops.

They are a bit marmite. Mine isn't subtle - I'm still unsure about it four months later - but I like the fact it hides the age.

just a note all plates brought on line are classed as show plates, not for road use, and can fail a mot only registered dealers who will need i.d. and they will have there registered name at the bottom, having said that my wife has had her plate on for 18 years, and i have had mine on for a few years both brought of line, with no issues but you only need one jobs worth :o

Eh not all plates bought online are show plates. I had my plate damaged by a hedge trimmer, couldn't be bothered to go to the local dealer, ordered on line and it has the name and postcode of the supplier on the bottom and is in standard font. In fact I've bought two set of plates online both like that so don't assume all plates bought online do not meet the requitrments by law.

ALL plates bought on line are Not "show Plates" you can order fully legal plates for the road, and show plates, where they will tweek them or add illegal backgrounds or badges /flags etc. with a warning that they are not for road use and you display them at your own risk. have done it for years with very few problems from the police.most will give you a warning. If plates are blatantly altered by moving letters and digit groups together and altering letters for numbers then you will draw attention to yourselves. bend the rules but dont take the p*ss . who was it said , laws are for the obedience of the ignorant and the guidance of the sensible. ... or something like that :driving:

I tens to get them through the supplying dealer send away a scanned copy of the form to the relevant parts department whilst waiting for the plates - My New MOT came through 2 days before the V5 - rang the DVLA and they confirmed transfer was completed so could change my plates ( remember to drill from the back to the front - I didn't  ) , tell your insurance company ( pay the admin charge :x ) and let any warranty and service department know.

Looks like we're going private plate mad :crazydude::

There are those who don't like them tho!

I've got sequential plates

I quite like them but it's surprising how many people have something against them.

Yep, when we put a PP on Cindy's X3, I checked the enquiry service daily - once it showed that it was taxed, I put the plates on, the DVLA paperwork arrived the following day

Until the reg shows up as on the system, you run the risk of tripping ANPR cameras in patrol cars but you should be fine now.

Smashing - Fingers crossed the new plates will be at home waiting for my return from work.

I'm looking forward to being charged an admin fee from Admiral, I've just added £30 worth of extras to my insurance policy because the guy on the phone was a top chap (and I know he'll get commission for it) - but I'll be exercising my rights to a 14-day cool off period if they try and charge me to change a few digits on their screen.

:P :P :P

Glad you mentioned insurance - I'd have completely forgotten when mine eventually goes through

You're also supposed to notify any relevant parties - so you better inform PVR (and pay his admin fee )

The closest I will get to notifying pvr will be a picture of my rear end once the :censored: is fitted

Best tell the Dartford tunnel folk though...

You had already asked my permission somewhere else, so that is fine Bingeling :P

Swapping plates has been such a faff lately, it used to be so much better when it could be done in 20 minutes at a local DVLA office. You can at least take a plate off a car online now, but AFAIK it's still just the same old paper system to put them back on another car. It's also got much harder to find plates to have in the first plate in the last few years IMO. Having no middle initial makes it hard too

Here are mine:

It's much easier than it used to be as you can now do everything on-line

-- Fill-in the on-line form and pay the £80 fee to get a Retention ID (valid for 10 years)
When you buy a new number plate from the DVLA you're sent an email (and a paper certificate) that has the Retention ID

-- Once you have a Retention ID you can then fill in another on-line form to assign the number to a different car.

There are no extra charges to assign the reg number to the new car as this is covered by the £80 fee for the retention ID.
