Private Registration Query

Hi all, just a quick one...

I've just bought a private reg online a few days ago from the DVLA, they've sent me the V7 (I think?) form and I've filled it in and sent it back with the V5C, it's currently sat in a postbox at the time of typing, that's where we're up to.

So, now I've got two queries:

1 - According to the DVLA site it should now take 4-6 weeks until I get my updated V5c... 4-6 weeks?! Are they walking it back to me from Swansea? That's up to a month and a half!? Do I have to wait over a month before I can put my new plate on or can I get it on sooner? Silly me for getting so excited about buying it!

2 - Which site should I use to buy the plates from? I'm certain they'll all do a similar job but is there any with better value for money or certain selling points?

Cheers all, X15 PAG for anyone interested. You'll be able to tell it's me though because I'll be flashing and waving like a madman. :driving:

I think they cover themselves by saying 4-6 weeks. It's usually a couple at most but I think some people had reported a bit of a back log at the moment and they were taking a bit longer to come through.

You've got a few choices, either buy online (which I am sure will be cheaper). Alternatively, go to your local BM dealer if you want their dealership name on the bottom. I guess that's personal preference and whether you live near where your car came from. Alternatively Halfrauds will make you some up for some extortionate price.

I am sure some people will be able to advise better than me. I've had my plates on the last 3 cars and just unstick and stick them on the next one each time.

it does really finish the Zed off when the age is hidden. Congrats on your plate. It hopefully won't be too long before it's on.

I think that it's the V948 form you need to get plates made up.

In my experience SwNsea process a lot quicker than 6 weeks.

According to https://www.gov.uk/displaying-number-plates/getting-number-plates-made-up I can take my V750 to the reg makers and that's enough for them to print it for me. The guys at my local indy are on the 'registered number plate supplier' list and I doubt they'll be arsey with me anyway, they've had my car a few times and know I'm no crook.

I've sent half of my v750 off to get it assigned, but i kept the receipt of purchase which has my name on it and the reg plate etc. Do you reckon its just a matter of checking the DVLA database a few times over the next week until the plate number becomes active, then I can go and get it printed and attached? Am i too keen?

I had my transfer in six days my mate had his purchase within two weeks, so the 4-6 weeks is a backside covering time slot.

Good luck

The last plate I bought a month ago took about a week to arrive.

Plates - online, no questions asked.

Had the same issue when I brought my plate from DVLA. I just got my plates made up and stuck them on the car within two days. If a copper had pulled me I'd have just played innocent. In the end the paperwork took about 3 weeks.

I bought one on Sunday and the v750 turned up yesterday - those timescales were quoted as up to two weeks. I've sent it and my v5 off today, but I have already bought my new plates from a seller on eBay. They didn't ask for the v5 or certificate of entitlement (though some did), and I just made sure I selected all the legal font & spacing options as well as confirming with them that the plates will have the BS number and manufacturer's postcode on them. Hopefully the v5 will come back quickly.

Mine is W88 ADC. One day it will look perfect on my Bugatti Veyron

Do you have to put the plates on as soon as you get it back, or is there a grace period ? I can't remember seeing anything about that online.

Agree with the above. They are usually quicker than 6 weeks.

My latest one took about 3 weeks.

I kept checking the Check if a vehicle is taxed DVLA website to see when the transfer had been done rather than waiting for the documentation to arrive back home.

As soon as it appeared, the plate was on my car.

I will be taking this approach also - at least there's no chance of the local bizzies getting me on an ANPR scanner that way. Any sooner and I have no doubt I'd get pulled by a jobsworth and given some silly fine.

Update: Just bought the plates off a site called 'Demon Plates' - I've just got to send a photo of my licence and receipt for the reg and they'll send them over.

Sod doing it 'by the book'

Once the V5 is back you should put them on because that's then the reg of the car.

When we had tax discs that would then turn about about 5 days after the V5 and you could and should put them on.

Once Alex has a car you may be able to treat him to something that matches yours - how about this?

There are those who don't like them tho!

I've got sequential plates

I quite like them but it's surprising how many people have something against them.

On average I have received my V5 back from DVLA in 3 weeks. Here's an online site that I have used for all my plates:
http://www.a1showplates.com/creator.html?registration=YOUR+REG&type=show&submit=&gclid=CNiFrNPigcICFe3LtAodhnAAkg
Just make sure to select 'road legal' when creating your plate

Can't see why people would have something against them.
Just a bit of fun or to hide the age of your car.

I think cars look good with them on - DPG's photo being the prime example.

That's cool

I have my new plates now... The W looks a bit weird compared to that one though, more squashed :?
