Private plate… worth it?

Yeah, it's slim pickings now for me so the J and E first and Last letters of my name had to do.
And there was I, thinking your middle name must be Xavier

Like that one

Never understood private plates.. Are they any different to popping custom wheels and stubby on your car? I guess not, just folk making their car a little more individual. Me I'm individual enough all ready, that I'm happy which a bog standard ///MR :D

I see them a lot but unfortunately they are the cheaper end of the scale which IMO aren't that great. They just don't look as clean or as good as dateless plates. That's my opinion though but most people have the dated private plates and they just don't look as good. In fact the guy across the road has private plates on all his work vehicles and private cars. All of them cheap and the only thing that is the same is MJA. His name is Michal John something maybe Adam(s). His company is also called MJA. Not very imaginative but I suppose his branding is on everything and having it on the cars is a form of free advertising as gets them vinyl'd too with writing for his business.

It's just a form of personalisation like people who get personalised covers for their phones or a decent phone cover.

I suppose a really good plate is much better than new wheels or a stubby. You could buy for example ZED 4 or Z 4 if you want one personal to the car. However the best is what is personal to you.

RAY 100 for someone called Raymond as an example I think that looks a lot better than MR53 RAY as an example of a dateless plate vs a dated plate.

The idea that people know who owns the car when you park up somewhere is only of concern if they are going to key it or lob a brick through the window. But chances are they would do that regardless of a private plate anyway. I don't care if anyone sees me out and about or my cark parked up anywhere.

I have a private plate that is my name plus a random number. I like it because it makes my car ageless and it makes me happy.
It cost me £350 which is relatively cheap, some people spend that money on booze in one weekend.

I personally don't like the idea of a car related plate but that's me looking back at the old XR3is with lots of extra Ford and XR3i stickers plastered all over the car. But that R8 looked good.

At the end of the day, do what makes you happy and sod the rest of us!

Well I’m glad my post opened up some discussion as to the pros and cons of private plates. 😁

I’m not going to bother. I’m spending the money on getting some little dings pulled out and replacing some badges.

So, so pleased with my purchase. And to think I was looking for an SL350!

When Mum gave up driving, I said I would put her plate on my Zed, which it currently is. Its not a valuable plate whatsoever, but when my Mum was 50 when my (not so old man at 44) passed away and we she needed a lift , so at the time bought a brand new Rover 220 GTI and we got the plate for nothing at the time, as part of just deciding on a plate via the garage we bought it. So, was cheap for Mum and she didn't want to loose it with her current car when she sold it to hang her keys up . So, not all plates are bought , some are hand me downs :D

They sell them in order. The fact someone makes meaning out of them isn't a concern of theirs. What is a concern is that their ANPR systems have to be able to read regi plates that's why you aren't allowed to do what you want with them.

Otherwise anyone could buy any plate and transform it into anything the like with the addition of placing screws, etc in the right places. Zero point of having regi plates at all if you aren't going to have a uniform way of displaying them. The fact people think they can do what they want is dangerous. The plates aren't their for aesthetics but identification.

Absolute bollox. ANPR has been around for about 15 years, laws on number plates spacing a lot longer. I would like to see how spacing a number plate is dangerous. Never heard of headlines like "massive pile up on M4; 15 killed due to slightly differently spaced number plate".

You have been a member since 2016. Why have you suddenly decided to spout your 'authoritarian' shite on every thread only recently?

Dangerous because how would you identify what car was used in a spur of the moment crime if everyone did what they wanted with number plates?

E.g. someone assaults someone and calls their mate for a lift. Mate has illegal plates which cannot identify the car.

Different from people on the rob who put on completely fake plates.

If you think the rules aren't in place for identification then what is the purpose of them?

Registration plates are the only unique easy to see identifier on a car. If you do what you want it makes them hard to be identified.

I once saw a car mount a kerb and crash into a parking meter and into the side of a building and then drive off. I quickly noted the regi plate.

Guess what the police praised me for?

Had this Pollock decided to modify his regi to make it harder to identify then he could have gotten away with it.

However, how much easier to quickly remember M28 HOC than some random long non private plate. Maybe not such a good thing then
