Good luck with finding an inkjet printer that will work with 'infrequent use'. Every single printer I have owned has become inoperable after a period of infrequent use - the nozzles dry up and sometimes no amount of cleaning will fix them, you end up paying a small fortune in replacement cartridges. Generic refills are cheap, but don't seem to last well either.
With colour laser printers so cheap now, have you looked into them? Yes, the toners are expensive (but shop around online and you can find much cheaper) but for infrequent use they're perfect.
Edit - just noticed you're after printing of photos. I don't think lasers do photos very well, so may not be a good choice after all? Can't say I've tried printing photos of any quality on mine.

We recently go a HP envey 5546 as our old one broke, free ink for 9 months and the £1.99 per month if we keep th DD running.

To be honest if you're infrequently printing photos then have them done in a shop. I switched to a mono multifunction laser a couple of years back for about £40, still on the original toner.

I bought the Samsung laser printer from pc world.. I know its pc world but it was cheap at 130 it also included 200 worth of toner. doesnt scan tho but does everything else that you wanted.

I use genius scan app on my phone/tablet to scan docs.

We've just bought an HP Envy 5640 because whilst there is nothing wrong with the old one, HP stopped making the cartridges. The wireless printing is useful, it prints quickly and the photos come out really sharp. Was very quick, less than 10 minutes to get up and running. Cost £85 delivered direct from HP.

Have yet to buy replacement cartridges, but I'm assuming that they won't be cheap! I assume that money is made on the cartridges as the printers are almost giveaway.

Thanks for all the feedback guys - am now looking into laser options
the HP inkjets i had looked into - so good to see some good reviews

+1 on the laser!

Personally, I have 2 HP2550 colour lasers in the shops, for which I paid £10.25 and £17 odd fo respectively, around 4 years ago from Ebay :D

I use them both daily, and have just replaced all of the toners in one of them, with genuine, new HP ones at a total cost of just under £100, again from Ebay. Photo quality isn't up there with a good inkjet, but they are perfectly acceptable for use in school homework and the likes.

When purchased, they both had nearly new toners in them, and the drums were about 15% used, now about 25%

I do love a bargain, and these are one of my best!

If you don't mind collecting, Ebay has some right bargains to be had. I find that the likes of these attract very few bids.

Have had no end of problems with inkjet printer, mainly HP and Epsom. As said, they do not like being left, and on top of that the "head cleaning" that they then go through wastes stupid amounts of what apparently is, the most expensive liquid on the planet. I read somewhere that per mg, it's more expensive than gold!
