Predicted energy price rises

I fitted a wood burner a couple of years ago,(should have done it 30 years ago) luckily being a joiner I can get plenty of off cuts for free to keep it burning, I wouldn’t like to think I was buying bags of wood from the supermarket to keep it burning as it wants restocking about every half an hour.
The laws on woodburning stoves have changed recently. Only fully seasoned hardwood should be used, apparently. How the hell they can police this I have no idea.
Typical Government. Encouraging the use of woodburners for years as it was deemed to be 'carbon neutral', then realising people were burning all sorts of sh*t on them so changing the rules to make it more difficult, and expensive, to use.
I miss my woodburning stove; want another. I have a bit of a 'log fetish', especially if they are free. :D

I have a multi fuel stove and use logs from the garden - only bought 2 tones in 4 years as I have a ready made supply - no one has ever checked what I burn

If you sell wood to burn it has to be dry and that is what they are policing, not you getting free wood and burning that. I have been told that they plan to limit the use of wood burning stoves in 2025 due to the pollutants. The only way I see that being possible is if you have other means of heating, we have gas central heating, a wood burner and free wood to burn (partner is a gardener and cuts down trees as part of that), so use gas until 16:00 then all evening burning wood, so I expect by 2025 we will have a choice rip out the gas boiler or rip out the wood burner. If you only have a wood burner what are they going to do, tell you you've got to go electric, who's going to pay for that.

Aren't gas boilers being phased out in 2025? So that will be interesting. I thought now the push is for heatpumps which look to be crazy prices at the moment.

Talking of wood burning a neighbour burns wood pallets and at times it stinks if the wind is right and you come back in the house smelling of smoked kipper

Tim.

Bit of a gamble as you might kick yourself if 27p suddenly sounds great after April.

Don’t know yet what I will do when mine expires on the 30th of April

Heat pumps are only efficient if it is a new build or very well insulated house, I live in a 400 year old cottage and replaced my boiler last year, looked at heat pumps but are talking a minimum of £5 or £6k more to install than a combi, so saving £300 a year it will not pay for me

Yes it is a gamble but my electric usage drops in the summer and I hope by the time winter comes next year things will have stabilised or the government have acted to reduce bills

Not certain how they will police wether you have a log burner and / or gas boiler either, I burn logs and then coal over night and its not to bad in the morning but the fire does not heat the whole house.

I want to look after the environment but some sense has to be applied with how people live today against how to can be changed going forward

Gas boilers are not being phased out, but by 2025 they have to be able to run on hydrogen, which will use the existing natural gas pipelines

That's the theory, anyway. The logistics of one day changing the pipeline grid from town gas to hydrogen is something I don't think this Country is capable of. 2125 would be more realistic IMO

Can you imagine the police knocking on your door asking to look at your pile? Checking the type of wood you've got against some photos like an ID parade?
You being carted off to the nick because you have some Larch when you should have Ash. :D

Surely this is the remit of special branch?

Pondrew- Isn’t the small print in the “be able” so that when the hydrogen does come through the pipes in 30 years, they can work 8)

Maybe they’ll use dogs that will bark when they detect something suspicious

We struck lucky when our supplier (Green Energy Network) went bust last year. We were automatically switched to EDF who offered even better prices. After 3 months they started pushing a 2 year deal which I would normally have declined as I like to switch yearly but after the hassle of getting our old account with Green Energy settled I went for it.

Electricty @18.08p/kwh and Gas 3.47p/kwh - fixed until August 2023, c£90/mth, I imagine I'm costing them a small fortune :D

So would all the millions of existing boilers have the ability to run on hydrogen without modification? I'm pretty certain hydrogen has to be stored under great pressure :?

Yes, there would have to be a way to run existing boilers on either town gas or Hydrogen. When (or if) the changeover to H2 happens it will be all or nothing as they will use the same infrastructure. To alter millions of boilers to run on either will cost billions. I don't think the UK Government will offer grants for this. If we are talking the next few years, they had better get their finger out in letting the public know.
I know that Bosch, who make Worcester boilers the biggest selling gas boiler brand in the UK, have spent millions on development of hydrogen fired boilers in the last few years.

I can imagine it would simply be a logistical nightmare if existing boilers required modification, cost, age of the appliance etc :|

Think its mores suited to the wooden tops - special branch are to be used for those cutting down the trees
