Prague and new camera tips

Hi all,

I have an upcoming conference in Prague early December and was going to stay a few days to look around. Wanted some advice on 2 things:

1. Must see places that those that have been recommend

2. I need a new camera as my iPhone is not enough to capture some of the lovely architecture there and I want to take some good shots at night as it will be Christmas market time and look very festive.
I am not a technical person and want to upgrade my current digital camera which was a hand-me-down from my brother. I was hoping I could get a general consensus on which camera to get that is easy to use for a beginner (I hate reading manuals for ages). I'd like to take some November pics of my car for the calender comp too! Any advice would be very welcome.

Thanks

for Q2 - knowing your budget would help a lot. With Digi Cameras, it is very much of you get what you pay for.

I'm not saying I have to spend that much, happy with cheaper recommendations..just if everyone suggests one that is very good that I must have then I will think of spending more.

I would like a general opinion not from just one person. And yes Prague looks great, really excited about going. Supposed to be very beautiful.

Well, there are various compact cameras that you could look at. Canon G12, Panasonic Lumix LX7, Fuji X10 to mention 3. All have their strengths, all have their weaknesses but the overall image quality is excellent.

They are capable of being a simple point and shoot job, or you can read the manual and be a bit more creative with them. One of them will set you back less than £500.

Thats a good starting point, I guess that I could pre-order it in Duty Free as I am flying from Heathrow and save a bit too. On a recent trip to Lisbon my friend had a Sony camera - her pics were very good. Don't know what type it was but what do you think of this brand for cams?

depends on your budget....

But the sony NEX series is a very good point and shoot... mirrorless and point and shoot.

Anything less and your iphone 4s will be more then capable.

Prague is lovely... great nightlife and beautiful girls  :P

How much is this approx?

I'm in terminal 1 right now. I'll have a look in a min for you :)

If you want to change lenses, the NEX range seems well regarded and the Lumix range also. If you want a really good compact, I still rate my Lumix LX-5 very highly.

A lot of the time it will come down to what you find most comfortable to carry around and use, and people's opinions will reflect that. That's one I the reasons Nikon and Canon have their rabid fans, they love the ergonomics of their brand when in fact both are fairly equal.

I'd try and avoid duty free unless there's an amazing offer on. One reason being you'll buy a camera which may well have a flat, or semi charged, battery and you won't be able to use it until you've charged it. Also amazon is often the same price. Dixons airport stores benchmark their prices so they don't charge vat, but they sure as hell aren't 20% cheaper

Ok, just checked Dixons. These are all changeable lens cameras

Panasonic Lumix models:
GX1 £549
G5 £649
G3 £369
GF5 £479

Sony NEX range
F3 £328.98
5R £499
7 £838.99

I've used none of these so cant comment other than to check dpreview etc for reviews. As i said, i have a Lumix LX-5 and it goes everywhere with me. As per my last, do check online for prices. The girl in store said they'd take advanced orders for you to collect. Don't forget a memory card!

personally i dont think getting it duty free is particular cheap.. or effective.. you'd want to charge it and get accustomed to the camera before heading off.

Also memory cards are wayyyy cheaper online then any duty free.

What I said (apart from the memory card part) :D

Memory cards are best bought from amazon. Don't get them from eBay, they're often fakes

Hi Ruby Blue

I know nothing about cameras!! But went to Prauge about five years ago. Its amazing you have to go to the old town. And see the clock tower and the square. Get a boat trip down the river to see all the amazing bridges.
And be careful on public transport ( its safe ) its just you buy a ticket and it works for an hour on the bus tram underground. Its a great system works brilliant. Unless like me you buy your ticket then don't get the time printed on it when you start using it. Then get caught by the transport feds!! And a big fine :x

Grate city great night life clubs bars you name it

I loved Prague. Went as a student - lots of sight-seeing as it is beautiful, lots of great food, lots and lots and lots of cheap beer, a teeny bit of education to fulfull the requirement of partial Uni funding. I still have one of those 2"x1.5" cobbles they use for the pavements on my desk :D

Unfortunately that is the limit of my contribution Rubes - I know nothing about magic picture makers :P

Don't stay in the Hilton unless you want to be mistaken for one of "them" ... 8)
