Prague and new camera tips

Don't stay in the Hilton unless you want to be mistaken for one of "them" ... 8)

Last time I was there, "they" had their own area and were doing a roaring trade with some of my Russian customers :D

Ruby, if you can get in, the castle/palace is spectacular inside.

'They' were very aggressive when we were there - one night, very drunk (see above), one of our party was dragged into a doorway and she had his pants halfway down before we spotted the rather large minders discretely stationed nearby... Only just got him out of a lot of trouble :o

So, don't dress like a boy

Also, we were told to watch out for gypsies on the subway when we were there - lots of distraction thefts, where one group kick up a fuss, and another relieve people of their valuables...

Prague is very nice. But! Prague IS the reason I now own a Nikon DSLR. As our our Canon powershot SD790IS was nicked from my wife. We were quite happy with it. If you look at the fall/winter photo topic that Tom started. The photo of me standing by the wife's 328 was taken with that Canon.

Ah good tip, I will be there alone for 3 days after the conference peeps go so need to be extra careful then. I wasn't planning on venturing out too much alone at night, maybe very touristy places like the markets but wanted to aim to do most of my sightseeing in the day and relax in a nice spa hotel in the evenings - any tips for one of these anyone?

Remember it gets dark very early.

I used to venture out at night, but as it always seemed to be -50 or so (well, it felt like that at least), I went straight to wherever I wanted to go in a taxi :)

unfortunately some of the most picturesque places in Prague dont allow you to take pictures

I was on a stagg do there earlier this year, Awsome place

Id like to go back again with the other half for to take in some more achitectural scenery

Would echo the suggestions above - see the castle/palace up the hill and see the clock tower - try to be around when it chimes on the hour as it there's a performance build into it like a giant cuckoo clock.

As for all the camera suggestions being thrown in - first question I'd think of is what type of camera do you want? A nice wee compact camera, a a chunky DSLR or something in between like a bridge or mirrorless CSC camera that's compact but you can still change lenses with.

Please don't take offense Ruby Blue. As none is intended. As you said you are not a tech guru. When one is new to DSLR photography and going on holiday at the same time. It can be a little daunting and frustrating to use and learn on the fly while in another country. You may want to try using your housemates canon at the weekend. And see how you get on with it. That might point you in the right direction. Even though I have a DSLR. I still own and use a compact P&S. It may make sense for you to go P&S for your holiday and add or upgrade to a DSLR/mirrorless after the Christmas holidays when every thing is on sale and your not in a rush. Again. Apologies.

I love Prague,i've been about 6 times. But if are going out at night don't carry any valubles. It can be a Pick Pockets paradise!
You will love it though. One of my mates rated it higher than New York for the scenery and we've done both.
You'll love it

Why are you apologising? That is quite good advice. I forgot about January sales.

Well! You had said in the OP that you were not a mechanically minded women. I didn't want you to think I was trying to point you to a simple P&S due to your lack of tech savvy.

I can strongly recommend going with a Czech girl then you're guaranteed to see the best sights
I like Fuji for cheap (<£500), high quality cameras with the option of fully automatic, fully manual, or anything in between. If you have no aspirations to become an amateur photographer an SLR is likely more bulky and more expensive than you'll need.

Point and shoot, can't go wrong. Lots of chat about the new canon on here previously.

Will be in T5 later today if you have any models that need price checking?

Prague is absolutely lovely! For me the MUST see place is the interior of St. Nicholas Church in Old Town Square near the steps up to the Castle. It is the most spectacular interior I've ever seen by the sheer atmosphere that it creates. Apart from all the obvious main tourist attractions, just take a walk around the residential parts of the lesser town and look upwards at all the decorations on the buildings; beautiful!

Enjoy!

Conference over, waiting for friends to arrive to join me for the weekend. Never got around to buying a new camera, borrowed my friends Sony Cybershot but used my iPhone a lot today on my solo wander. It's beautiful here, very gothic architecture. Taking pics was an effort as each time I took my gloves off thought my hands would fall off its so cold. Thanks for tips of for what to see, I thought of Exdos as I walked into St Nicholas' church.
