Power Steering Fault light On

enuff_zed - they have asked me to send the unit back in so I will let you the results when they respond. Away for a few days so won't get around to it until beginning of July. Interested to know of the person you mentioned who has a similar problem and appears to live with it by just persisting with the start-up until the fault self-clears. What would be interesting to know is how he gets on with the MOT, I don't believe heavy steering is a failure issue but like to hear more about this. The whole problem is frustrating me, I bought the car (a 2004 2.5i) as a project and its in immaculate condition, has had new hood and motor (now boot relocated), new rear springs and struts, newish front struts, new tyres all round, immaculate bodywork with no rust and an M54 engine that does not appear to burn a scrap of oil. I would hate to sell it on because of a persistance with this problem.

I'm collecting this new to me car next Saturday and driving it 180 miles home.
That'll be the test :D

Will stay in touch and give you feedback after the 2nd trip to ECU Testing. Seriously thinking about a hydraulic conversion if this doesn't sort it out, would be an interesting winter project if I can gather all the detailed experience from others who have done the job, they say the feedback through the steering is much more realistic than that provide through the electrical power systems.

An update on getting my EPS fix - have just sent the EPS motor back to ECUTesting for the 2nd time since the initial fix partially worked but still left the motor with an intermittent fault, after the second examination, they have now confirmed they cannot fix - so motor effectively kaput. It's probably a eureka moment since the decision has now been made - it's going to be a hydraulic conversion. Just in case this may have come about I did start collecting bits and so far have the E46 purple rack and the LF-20 pump but there's more to get. I still have questions for the experts who have successfully made this journey so best to start a new thread where all can contribute and hopefully benefit from the answers if planning to do this themselves.

Thanks for the update. Bigwinn has suggested I start cheap by checking out the contacts in the Steering Angle Sensor. Costs nothing but a bit of time, so why not. Then it'll be EPS out and away and fingers crossed it works for me!

I did check my angle sensor with the diagnostic unit but that appeared to be without faults, also, I thought the angle sensor was associated with the DSC control and ABS and not directly associated with the power steering but I am open to learn more. I would image not easy to check since I believe it is buried inside the steering column

Don't think access is too bad, but I'm of the same opinion as you tbh. But it's not like I'm in a rush so may as well check it.
Though then you run the risk of disturbing something that was fine beforehand.
