Potential Coupe trouble spot

I checked mine this morning (Jan 07 registered) and there is a 1*1.5cm^2 patch of corrosion showing on the underside of drivers side boot opening. My car has only 20k on it and is not used as a DD (well not anymore anyway)

It's a 12 year corrosion warranty anyway, so will have BMW have a butchers when it goes for it's service later in the year.

Pretty poor show for a 4 year old car though. My 10 year old Pug 306 has NO rust!

Maybe it's bad spraying. The OP has all different colours showing the primer in places, mine is all covered in base coat - maybe they changed the coverage areas after 07 or something?

Either way it's a BMW issue not yours to sort

That will definitely be covered by the 12 yr anti-corrosion warranty and will be sorted for free. I had something similar on the E46 M3 boot and had it sorted by BMW last summer

Sure looks like the inside surface has been resprayed. Looked at mine and the inside surfaces of the lid have a smooth paint finish that matches color and texture of the exterior. Yours appears to have an orange peel texture which is classic repair/respray. Maybe a previous repair which required the rear window to be removed/replaced and the window gasket was not installed properly resulting in water leakage into the interior of the lid.

All of the interior paint I've seen on the tailgates are primer and basecoat only, never seen them being lacquered. I don't think it looks resprayed, it just looks more like BMW doing a bad job - I've seen many worse finishes in the engine bays of 1 series for instance.

I would say if it was orange peely it was original BMW, if it actually looks well finished it's after market. Since water based paints came in BMW really struggle to get a good finish at all, I often wonder if they are actually communicating in brail from the paint shop to the outside world.

If the water damage was coming through the window, the rot would be in the bottom corner where the water would pool in a double skinned lid, or if it had stayed there it would have rotted through the metal leaving a hole - it's not that it's surface rust.

It's also pretty standard for OEM finishes these days too. They banned two pack paint a few ears ago and manufacturers are struggling to get the same quality finishes with water based paints, check out the finish on any new BMW and you may be surprised...

You can normally tell if panels have been painted on BMWs if the original matt finish isn't there on the non-visible metal parts, like the insides of the wings that are covered by the bonnet: they should be matt if original, and glossy (identical to the outside) if painted by a bodyshop.

Have an appointment for it to be evaluated on Friday by the warranty guy at the local dealer.
UPDATED:WIll be getting an answer hopefully some time next week. Shouldn't be a problem but an area manager might want to inspect it further as they do in a number of cases, partly to try to find out exactly why it's happened. No sign of accident damage. Will be a replacement boot not a repair.

Okay, this is indeed going to be a new boot. It's now booked in to have the work done under the anti-corrision warranty and will be without the car for up to four days :(. Will actually save me a few quid as I'll have one of their rattly oil burners

Great result

I do love the courtesy cars, I always make appointments with customers as far away as possible, charge them the 40p a mile and make a profit that way as well :D

He he. - I made sure that I ordered my new mountain bike to be picked up whilst I had my courtesy car. :D - Difficult (though not impossible to fit in a zed).

(I did fit a 'Muddy Fox' in my MG Midget once!)

I washed/polished/waxed the car yesterday, and with this thread in mind I also waxed the underside of the boot lid :)

Probably won't help, as the damage seems to be coming from the inside-out.

If it's caused by an external factor, then BMW may refuse the claim.

Have they figured out the cause of this yet? Or are you still waiting to take it in?

I noticed today, water escaping from underneath the window seal on mine.

In the centre of that pic is the vertical line of the rear window where it meets the roof line. It's been dry all day, and a little water seems to have collected under the rubber seal...

Interesting. Mine might have done that too although I've not paid too much attention prior to finding the problem. However I have definately noticed more splashing in that area than I did with my previous Si, in fact it has splashed on the boot plastic roller cover (a few drops) which never happened with my Si. Not sure this proves anything though as might just happened to open the boot after a downpour and therefore more water outside which then caused a splash on opening the boot. Next time it rains I may remove the water from outside and see if anymore drains out when the boot is opened

Not sure I'll find out exactly what's caused it but definatley suspect water seeping through the seal. Car goes in on Monday 6th June. Car will probably go back in soon after that as now suspect rear spring number 2 broken :(, it has lasted nearly 55k miles though so shouldnt complain.

Replacement boot now fitted. Interestingly the new one has a few drain holes/air holes left unblocked. Previous M boot had them blocked with some kind of stoppers I believe. Took 1.5 weeks to do as the first and only UK sourced boot was sprayed up and then found to be faulty where the badge fits (the flip up lock) so another new one had to be ordered from Germany. Been driving a couple of courtesy car diesels and must say driving the M again is just fantastic. Driving it daily over time you don't appreciate it so much but after 1.5 weeks without it heck it feels fantastic :driving:
