I like the picture, but where are the wingtips?!
From the Mk V onwards, some Spitfires had their rounded elliptical wingtips "clipped" outboard of the ailerons, effectively removing 4 feet of wingspan. The shorter, squared-off tips improved low-altitude performance and enhanced the roll rate hugely, one area where the Mk V fell badly behind the rival Focke Wulf Fw 190  20200103_192709.jpg20200103_192745.jpg

Despite loving the Spitfire since childhood, I’ve never heard that before. They look really weird!
Supermarine Spitfire LF Mk.XVIE
A bit of history of the actual aircraft is here: https://www.airforcemuseum.co.nz/aircraft/supermarine-spitfire-lf-mk-xvie/
The fibreglass replica used to stand outside the Brevet Club on the approach to Christchurch airport. The Brevet Club was demolished and the Spitfire relocated to Spitfire Square, a shopping complex close to the airport.

Been great today to get out and about and enjoy the winter sunshine

I remember seeing the Spitfire at the airport back in 2013 but didn’t notice the stubby wings at the time.
It’s a shame it’s been moved, its most fitting home is at an airfield. I used to love driving passed RAF Northolt in London as a kid just so I could look at the Spitfire at the gates.

Dry and a bit of sun so top down and head out for a drive.

Snow, hail and rain meant it had to go back up for about 15 minutes but overall it was great.

As I was out taking the pictures an unmarked 5 series was pulling a wee Suzuki estate of some description. Glad I decided to take some pictures.

That’s so clean you must have transported it there Grant! :P
Rob
It was cleaner yesterday after I washed it.
Space grey is very forgiving in the sun.
Hides the dirt well.
Roads were still damp in places, but nice to get the roof down in the sun ☀️

I definitely want silver mirrors for my black E89.....nice to see these cars being used and enjoyed...I am suffering with a long term back injury at the moment and the chances of me being able to even get in and out of my car for the next month or so seem a long way off☹️

If what I read is right there could be a bit of truth in that for all pensioners. Ya pay in yer whole life and what do you get? Crumbs

Ah - The magnificent Spitfire(s). Never was a better mechanical bird. A thing to be proud of for sure. There is a flying museum close by. The drag out all the WWII birds once a year for a wonderful show. All the planes roaring by in one low pass after another from Allies and Axis nations. Love the big radial engines
