Post pics of your.... push bikes :-)

8 miles in 40 minutes is not bad going - average of 12mph, given the hill you mention that's not bad. I run my bike computer in kph - the bigger figure is less depressing than a lower mph figure :D. On my commuter CX bike my cruising speed on flat tarmac is 27-30kph, but that drops (just) into single figures on the hills - no idea on actual gradient. I've only got a dual-ring setup at the front 39t/52t but I fitted an MTB cassette on the back to gain a bigger big cog - cassette is 32t-11t I think.

Anyway, my next MTB purchase is likely to be one of these

Yep, she's so wrong. The correct number of bikes to own = current fleet + 1....

Cycle home today... rain, with some more rain. Passing cars going through puddles and chucking water at me. Got home... wet, shorts, sodden. Shoes full of water and socks soaked. Totally puffed out. But, you know what :)

thejonesy, nice collection

and there is a sort of perverse satisfaction from getting so wet that it doesn't matter anymore :D

Oh definitely. Sometimes you reach that stage where you go aiming for the puddles...

Giant, "the wheels ga roond and roond" (got Kevlar tyres) Resting against fence after 35 mile round trip of Ypres battlefields and war graves. Followed by good strong ale and hearty Belgian stew in Ypres main square. My other bike is a bright yellow Brompton folding, fits in boot nicely.

Pawn what rack are you using on the Z4, and do you have confidence it wont damage the car. Saris Sentinel do one they say is suitable for Z4, the bones model isnt, but this would solve my immediate issue of selling the Z4 :D

PM sent.

For the benefit of others, it's a...
F2: Hollywood Baja Spoiler Rack for 3 Bikes - bought in 2007 for £70.

This looks like the replacement...
http://www.wiggle.co.uk/p/cycle/7/Hollywood_FB3_Baja_Universal_3_Bike_Rack/5360042665/
(good site for anyone not using already)

I was using it wrong, so I'll test it again this weekend  But yes, worked well.

Well, nothing to fiddle with on the Zed just now and not cleaning weather, so a further test of the bike rack. Having not used it for 2 years the last time I did I'd put it on the wrong way around :? :?

Here's a pic with the rack on the boot - three anchor points on each side:
Z4-Rack.jpg

The bike on the rack. There are three carriers on the top, I used the middle as it holds the peddles well away from the boot.
Z4-Rack-Side-with-Bike.jpg

Final photo of the bike on the rack - in the right corner I have put an exploded view of the contact points. There are two along the top and a third which attaches to the vertical bar on the bike and holds it uprights. Each of the three points has an elastic fastener.

Okay, so that is the bike on the rack in situ. I thought a road test would be in order

This is me driving along a less than perfect B road. Poor quality due to being filmed on a BlackBerry (masking taped to my tripod which itself was standing on and masking taped to the open centre storage bin). The clip is longer than it needed to be but I was waiting for somewhere to stop.

While the bike, and camera, move around a little you can see the rack stands fast. BTW, I was aiming for the bad bits in the road, not normally like that

Before putting the rack on the car I put masking tape under the hooks and marked their starting position. Below shows where they were when I got back. I didn't do the ones on the bottom of the boot as these do not move. I had been out for 30 minutes or so and actually went along some very bumpy little roads.

Very pleased with the results and would recommend this for anyone needing a rack. The movement on the right strap / hook happened almost immediately (I stopped after half a mile to check) and it did not move again. I think could be sorted with experience and better positioning. There wasn't too much noise at 70mph on an open dual carriageway either.

Have a look at THIS option for carrying bikes on a Z4 - coupe or roadster. Not cheap at over $400, but looks like a quality bit of kit.

I have looked into this, but their price inc shipping was $589 + VAT and duty our end would out at £450, and I aint spending that on a rack.

Looking for a bike rack to take 1 maybe 2 mountain bikes. Useful thread this. What do people think is the most useful, non-bodywork damaging carrier on the market? I contacted Saris direct and they recommended the Saris Guardian 2. Has anybody used this model before/have experience? i seriously don't want to damage the 4!!

Thanks all.

inkey$, not sure about that one. Certainly looks similar in style to the one pawnsacrifice is using, and Saris is a decent enough brand, so you'd hope it would be a decent rack. Not ideal if you're buying online, but might be best finding a local shop where you can try a rack on before buying it. My local bike shop was great in that respect with my previous car, although we didn't find a rear rack that fitted it in the end.

On a seperate note, I need to lay off the pies

That happened on a ride last weekend, luckily on the way home after 6hrs in the saddle. New saddle now fitted (SDG Bel Air - soooo comfy) along with new chainrings and a chain device:

Only observation with the picture of the Sentinal 2 is that there doesn't seem to be anything to hold the bike away from the car. Not sure it shows that well, but on my Hollywood rack there are plastic brackets (I guess) that fold down and hold the bike out at a right angle to the main support bars and away from the boot of the car.

Thats my worry. Really don't want any bumps to cause metal-on-metal impact so any angle I can get on the bike would be ideal.

Never knew so many people here did biking, will have to upload mine.

Its a Dirt jump / Trials bike, its a Custom built DMR Sidekick, In brown with 410 Argyles.

Look forward to seeing it as I've been thinking about something like that - I've been getting more airborne in the past year or two and something like that would be good for a laugh. Not sure I've got the skills for dirt jumping quite yet, but watching NWD1o again last night made me want to go and buy a jump bike again

Well I have just spent £450 on a cycle carrier, will post details and pics tomorrow when I get it.
