Possible group buy - folding roof covers

Hi Mike/all,

Apologies, up until 0830 this morning I was going to be using DHL to pick up the packages. However, following a much delayed call back from UPS (8 days), they have managed to offer a better rate subject to me opening an account. To do so, I need to scan a copy of a council tax bill and ID (which I'll be doing when I get home tonight).

Upon using UPS it will mean that I'll be slightly out of pocket, instead of massively out of pocket!

Apologies again for delay, rest assured I'm after them ASAP also!

It actually works out cheaper for me to fly to Germany to pick them up myself :headbang:

is that actually the case? cos like.. I live next to East Midlands Airport, and would be quite happy popping over for a day to collect, if it didn't cost anything to do so :P

It really is! Although by the time you factor in taxes and excess weight (nearly 35kg packaged) possibly not.

For future reference, it's worth trying web sites like http://www.shiply.com/ or http://www.anyvan.com/ to get quotes.

Basically you tell them what you want picked up, where it's to be picked up from and where it's going to, as well as how flexible you are on time. You then get quotes from people who will be travelling that route and have space in their vehicle. I used it when I bought my hard top from the same people that are selling the roof covers, and I got a really good price from a guy who had delivered a van load of stuff to Germany and was coming back with an empty van (I think it was £240 door-to-door from Munich to Winchester).

Not suggesting that the OP does this now (he's already done enough running around and account opening!) but it may be useful in the future for anybody trying to get a large parcel delivered from Germany (or, indeed, from anywhere to anywhere!)

Tried both - cheapest quotes still more expensive than couriers :(
 
Mohedine, we are all probably feeling a little guilty with all the hassle you are having, if there is anything at all we can do to help let us know, your efforts are being appreciated. If the transport costs do need to increase then let us know and we can decide which way to go. Assume the covers are still with the supplier awaiting collection?

Appreciate your words of support, though literally feel like this :headbang: at the moment!

It's completely my fault, as I was wary of how rare and in short supply the covers are; so decided to buy first and get quotes for shipping later. Partly also to the fact that I had no idea of the weights/dimensions involved until after purchase.

Last night I sent an email with my council tax bill and a made-up company letterhead to the sales executive at UPS to open a business account. I've told him it's urgent to get the packages over from Germany asap (this was music to his ears as I'm sure he's paid commission).

Yes, covers fully paid for, packaged, and waiting collection. As soon as I've had confirmation of account opening, the delivery will be scheduled. As previously mentioned, using UPS means I'll be a little out of pocket (just over £57 to be precise) whereas I'd be well over £100 out of pocket using DHL!

I'm happy to bear this cost, as I'm equally feeling guilty over the timescales involved for everyone thus far.

Many thanks for the update, I don't see why you need to be out of pocket, I for one would be prepared to pay the little extra. see what others say?

this.. it's an extra £3.20 each to cover your out of pocket expenses (£57 split 18 ways).
that's a pint each, which, tbf, you deserve :thumbsup:

Thank you, but I can completely understand if you're alone - I appreciate there may be a sentiment of annoyance at having to pay extra, so I hope people don't feel obliged to.

I wish I could get a pint of decent beer here for £3.20. Getting very close to £4 a pint. :-(

I certainly don't expect Moheddine to be out of pocket at all at the end of this group buy. I'm immensely grateful for all the time and effort he has put in. I always thought that the initial £65 payment was a "best guess" at the time (especially as we didn't want to take a chance on somebody else buying all the covers) and expected there to be a further adjustment once the actual costs were known. Whatever that turns out to be, I'm happy to pay it.
