After soMe sober second thoughts..
I'M thinking why stop with just an M badge on a 3.0si ...????

Why not a 370 Z from a Datsun ?
Plus a Zeus Pickle Fork from a Maserati ?
And a Z 28 froM a CaMero ?
Imagine how confused the other motorists would be ?

Lordy - We could go sticker mad like when we were little kids !
Everything is on Ebay too !!!

God I love the ideas I pick up here ..
Cheers Mates !

PS ..Thanks to learning how to D-Badge my Z here ...Ive got lots of body panels to pick froM too !
Can't possibly be worse than an art car full body wrap ? ..
Or could it ?

There was something fishy about my Saab (900turbo) after I added a 't'. And then there is the fun of chatting to Barry and suggesting his car looks so good it should have an 'M' on it.

anywayup lookalikes are flattery.

I want ///M door sill plates. Feel like I am looking at a bit chopped off an engine cover ever time I open my door to see silver plastic BMW. Gonna find me some
the illuminated z4 ones look nicer and dont bring the wrath of the M brigade

Personally, I don't like the illuminated ones. I want ///M ones - cheaper too. Though the only ones on eBay are £70 and in a right state though

Couldn't care less what people think about sills that only I will really see. Personally I wouldn't put external ///M badges on a non-M, but I'm not precious about it in any way - though some attempts are laughable, like the OPs pics. ///M snobbery ? Ignore it. E89 snobbery, now that's a whole different matter  :fuelfire:

I'm having a hard time finding the line between good and poor taste here.

So, if I put a set of "M" wheels on my Z, am I a poser?
I know some members here have done just that ... kind of a grey area, innit.

How about "M" badges on my garden variety but original BMW wheels?

It could be argued that the wheels are actual "M" equipment while the badges are merely brand insignia, but since the full wheels aren't really going to make a difference to performance aren't they nothing more than brand insignia as well?

Ooh ... dangerous territory when you get all logical about it.

It's not a new craze. I had a 98 MZ3R and noticed several MZ3's with badges, 16 inch wheels and a single set of twin exhausts. I doubt I would have noticed if I had not owned the real item. But BMW owners are not the only ones guilty of badge engineering. Honda based " rice rockets" were not credible without at least four VTEC badges despite the fact that VTEC technology was never used in the cars so adorned. The most blatant example I can remember seeing was a Toyota Tercel with VTEC and M badges.

Thanks for making my day... This site is awesome...

My friend once heavilly modified his skoda Fabia 1.2 htp with full body kit and all sorts of cutouts and vents.. People were asking Obvious question what engine it has?
He had to sell it cos it was making him pissed of when people asked him that question...

So much to this topic ... M badges on non m cars? It's up to the Barry who owns it :D

I find it amusing when they put M badges where they don't belong but i wouldn't call them twats or anything... What does bother me though is when you talk with them and they try to convince you that their 520d M-Sport has M5 suspension, brakes and electronics and the only different thing is the engine.... (Yes that really did happen)

I have an ///M and was thinking of taking the badges off...!?! Not sure where that puts me - tw@t? ;-)

This is one of those threads that crops up every year or so. It's a pointless debate really. M-powered cars are seen to be the pinnacle of each series of BMW cars and so some owners of less expensive models may want to adorn their cars with extra M badges. It's a harmless practice in my opinion. Live and let live and all that. There are far more important things to fall out about. Now if you were to ask me about BMW's dilution of the M brand then that might be a different answer....

In defense of Barry, their efforts are not backed by multimillion design teams and body shops yet they still attempt to realise their vision. Good on them. Creative solutions, innovative use of materials, finding unworkable compromises and going ahead anyway. They may be short of cash and their styles may be a tad derivative but I wish them all the best and more power to their elbows.

There is a deal of passion for motoring in their work, probably a good deal more than you would find in the premises of a BMW main dealer.

Go Barry!

Posted this before, but found it on my photobucket account...

I'm also thinking of taking off the M badge. Its a bit tacky.

People that know what ///M is know when a car has just been badged up.
People that don't know what it is haven't got a clue what ///M means so therefore when they see the badge it means nothing to them.

So the people that badge up their cars are fooling nobody, only themselves but does this really matter because of this?

Possibly most of them are just people who would love an ///M but quite possibly can't afford one so this is the next best thing for them, to get the 'look' (in their eyes)
They aren't hurting anyone and it makes them happy.
People with ///M's can drive away satisfied and secretly smug in the knowledge they are lucky enough to own a real one.

While healthy debate and banter is very welcome, fun and passes the time, I think sometimes we can be a tad too judgemental and unfair. We are all guilty of this at times.
There are also, on the flip side of the coin, people who are overly sensitive and throw their toys out the pram about posts but then post critical comments themselves.
We have to remember we are a mixed bunch on here who, for most of the time, are friendly, very helpful, have a laugh and have good natured banter. We all have different opinions on everything from our cars to our favourite telly programme. We all come across in different ways and we don't all have to accept or like each other.
We can debate about anything and everything but we can do it in an intelligent and non school-yard way can't we?
Here endeth the first lesson.

Right, I'm taking my ball in now, you tw@ts can go buy your own.
And put an ///M sticker on it if you want, I don't care.

That's my sentiment for the most part.

I'm more of the sort that would remove the M badge. We in America call them sleepers. My pal and I built such a car in 1978. Took a standard 350 V8 Camaro. Built up a 350 LT1 V8 Corvette engine with our own hands. Ended up at 440HP on the dyno. No turbos, No supercharger. And it wasn't loud either. Lowered it. Painted it in 1978 Corvette white with some Shelby blue stripes around a factory L88 hood scoop. Very, Very understated. People were shocked at how fast that car was. As it looked to be stock. We could of gone and plastered it with big 440hp stickers, LT1 Corvette emblems. But to us fast and understated was much more fun than slow and over the top. But that's how WE liked it. Some felt that after being beat in a race that it was not fair that it LOOKED stock. To each their own.

Whats a 510?

The only 510 car that I know of. Is a Datsun 510 from the 70's. Which was very popular and a superb car. Won the 1971-72 trans am series for the under 2 ltr class.
