Would take a 981 over an E89. Not sure the image is an issue when E85/E89 are pretty flash in most people's eyes anyway. The E89 especially, has the look of a far more expensive car.

Actually, on that note. Bloke down the road has just bought/leased a 428i Sport. Definitely a head turner. Those nostrils ate epic!

I guess not - but the E85 and equivalent generation Boxster are closer in target markets I would have thought.

I test drove both Boxsters and Z4's... before deciding on the Z4. Mainly because I got a newer, lower milege example for my budget.

This is NOT overstated...the engines do give up...they suffer terribly from borescore....i know first hand
 
I had a Cayman 3.4s and a Boxster 3.2s last year and swapped to the Z4 35is I missed the creature comforts I can get in the Zed, as I have posted before the Porsches are like go karts and will out handle a Z4 though the 35is would just have the edge in a straight line, they are great cars and it has been said the Cayman in the right hands will out handle a 911, the only trouble with the earlier models they can suffer from IMS failure which can totally wreck the engine if it goes and there had been some horror stories on the forum and it was always at the back of your mind, I used to have a old 911 Carrera Sport (air cooled) kept it just a week I hated it I preferred my 944 instead though I still fancy a 997.
 
I have had a go in a 2013 Cayman and i absolutely loved it.Also loved the styling with the deep sculpted side vents.....


I have always thought the Boxster and Cayman handled better than a 911.....My friend has a Boxster 3.2s and the handling is flat and neutral...Ideal..

Comparing my 2002 Boxster S to the equivalent BMW, my two Z3's. (both 2002 3.0i )
BMW wins on looks, Pcars win on handling and power....and seat comfort, drive more than a couple of hours in the Zeds and your cheeks need medical help or a really big cushion.

- once the refit is done on the IMS bearing, it's a non-issue.... :thumbsup: I love both of em :D

hmmm... BMW gets points for style...that's it. With the 911, for 40% more $$$ than the BMW do you get 40% more car? Maybe , maybe not but you do get more, it might not be full measure but it is a lot more...

The only thing I have against the 911 is it came with XM radio, I prefer Sirius :lol: (its the same damn company but the customer service operates them as separate companies and XM are pathetic next to Sirius IMO :rofl: )

I agree that people see Porsche as a more desirable marque. Not sure if it's pure badge snobbery or their more honed in drivers cars - from the recent increased numbers of Porsches in our office car park I think it's the former!

I think BMW have fallen behind somewhat in the kudos stakes and are appealing more to the masses. What they are lacking in their line up is an Audi R8 equivalent. The M cars are awesome but a modern version of the original M1 is what they need.

The current Jaguar line up is impressive - the F type is beautiful and if funds ever permit and if I could get over my loyalty to BMW, I'd consider a Jag

Autocar's F-Type loan car has already suffered a head gasket failure and plenty of other niggles. If this Press Car's a lemon....

As for Porsche v BMW. There isn't too much crossover yet but there will be in years to come. There is already Boxster/Cayman v Z4, Cayenne v X5, Macan v X3 and Panamera v 7-series, but soon there is also going to be a 'junior' Panamera v 5-series too.

It will be interesting if the values that made Porsche the 'halo' brand it is will still be there after a few years in the vast conglomerate that is VAG. It is prestige brand simply because of the image of the 911 really and their prowess in making great sports cars and then racing them.

Sars is right though - the new 981 Boxster is fabulous. If I hadn't got my heart set on a GT3 I'd have to be seriously looking at that and the Cayman S. They are both now so much better looking than they were since they have been given their own design rather than being designed around 911 architecture.

As for the engine failures....get a GT3 or a Turbo. :fuelfire:
 
After I sold my first Z4 I tested a 2003 Boxster S 3.2 - biggest problem for me was the size - unfortunately as I'm freakishly tall there was no headroom - I was underwhelmed by the interior - the good things were the sound of the engine ( orgasmic ) , looks ( I know it looks like a jelly either end but it works ) , felt quicker than the zed. Other downside things were the mpg ( 23mpg on a good day ) Service costs ( the engine's a bugger to get to ). Having said all this had I managed to fit in it I might well have bought it - after all it is a Porsche . I went for another Z4 in the end because it was better value . cheaper service costs , almost as fast and for me "plenty " of room without banging my head when the roof is up. A friend of mine has a red 987 Boxster s - slightly more headroom ( just ) , definitely better interior and red ( the best colour for a sportscar ) . I've had to settle for the second best colour for my latest zed ( sterling grey ) as red 3.0's are rarer than hens teeth.
 
I've had 3 Porsches over the years, my last was a 1980 911 SC which I had fully restored and modified, I kept that car for over 10 yrs and loved it, however it's not a patch on my ///M, for power, fairly obviously. build quality and driving pleasure, in the looks dept it was better IMO 8)

I still look at the air cooled cars on PH, they hold their money really well and seem to be going up too if you have a good one, I'm not too fussy on the W/C 911 models, GT2/3, GTS and Turbo aside, I may have a later Boxster, like Carols getting or a Cayman in the future but not yet, the ///M R's and C's are still the best value cars at the moment IMO :thumbsup:
 
Mine was a 1979 Carrera 3 Sport originally belonged to Roger Clark and was featured in the first issue of 'Just 911' magazine, here's a picture from the photo shoot:

My wife's cousin married Roger Clarks son, Matt, I'll ask him if he has anymore pics of your C3S, it looks a similar colour to mine from that pic, although mine was painted in Cobalt Blue which was a 964 colour first I think, was yours Minerva Blue?

I looked at the new boxter and then promptly bought a Z4 instead. I really love the new boxter look too. Not sure what was going on there to be honest. As my other halfs mate keeps telling me I could of had a second hand 997 for that money. Only because he's trying to shift his!

Sorry I gave bum info, it is a 1977 Carrera 3.0 Sport, it was resprayed in Tahoe Blue before I acquired it and is still that colour, I didn't own it when the photo shoot was done but the current owner contacted me as he was putting together a dossier on the history of the car, it is quite a comprehensive history as well, one of Roger Clark's sons (Oliver?) is quoted as saying he remembers getting locked in the car for some hours and weeing over what was then the tarten coloured seats (he was 4 then) but remembers the event.
