Hi guys, from time to time on here i see members going from BMW to Porsche....am i the only one that has done it the other way around..Porsche to BMW? Also do the members see Porsche as a more desirable marque than BMW and if so what other marques fall into this catagory ?

I thought about a Cayman or older 911 for my next car. However, having a Porsche would just make my life harder and bring unwanted envy to many situations.

I think the BMW brand is good. Porsche is more prestigious IMO, but I wouldn't want to own one

I don't see Porsche as having better tech or even better style but I do see Porsche as having a more focused and better engineered car. But that's just a perception having never owned one, just driven a few.

My last 911 C4S lasted 3 weeks...

Bloody awful thing, I do forgot how much I dislike the 911 ownership experience .

In the last 5 years ive had ,2 Vw,s , 1 Mercedes E Class , 1 lexus 300 Sportcross , 2 x 911,s & a flurry of BMW,s , 520d,330d,645Ci,X3, Z4coupe & now onto my first Audi experience 8)
My thoughts ?
Of course a Porsche is more desirable mainly down to badge snobbery & not build quality .
The Lexus was simply faultless in every way & would have another when i hit late 50,s
BMW,s ? They do what they do well enough but unless you pay out some big £££ then it,s hard to make a basic model feel special ?
Currently have our family X3 for sale & if it goes it will most likely be replaced with an Audi estate of some description :driving:

A 911 is a marmite car... I adore how the look, especially the wide body car.

But IMHO everything else is a let down... They do handle well, but on a daily basis that is less than 1% of the full experience..
Crap seats, crap interior, unusual pedal positions..

I do realise that I'm very critical of most cars, that's my job... Lol..But the 996 has so many fundamental errors that owning one can be a chore for an owner that worries about every squeak and rattle.(me)

I have tried all flavours of 996,.. Coupe, cab and widebody but won't have another.. If I do it will be a 997.2 with a DFi engine..that's if they don't start lunching there engines once a few miles have been put on them..

Fair enough. I've always fancied owning a 911. I'll just have to work a bit harder and get a singer

What's your job though?

Different market sector as well. How many saloons do Porsche make?

BMW don't really make an equivalent model except for the X5 against Porsche Cayanne.

You wouldn't see the Z4 & Boxster as competing models?

+1

I thought I was the only one....

Ive has boxster s, Cayman s and a 996 911....cayman was the best....wasnt a car to go a long drive in due to road and engine noise..but as a sports car it was pretty unbeatable...but the Z4 is definately better to travel in.....

I had a Boxster a few cars back - I prefer the Z4 based on comfort and quality of the interior - future servicing and maintenance were also a concern going forward for me.

The dealers at the Porsche garage were far nicer and they had fancy steel cups for your hot drinks when you were there!

They also gave me a couple of baseball caps when I bought the car although no discount was to be had on the new car!

The boxster in its latest generation looks much nicer inside than the one before that I had and I was never really impressed with the interior even though I had leather and at that time there was no aux socket!!!

They seem to be very driver and performance focused but lack the innovations that BMW have and are a few years behind - IMO it is a more elite brand and more exclusive although there are much more on the road since they have brought more models into manufacture

Okay I'm going to come out now, I really want a 981 Boxster. Why, the 3rd generation I believe has hit the nail firmly on the head, looks, style, quality, lovely interior, performance, drivability and value (as long as you don't go mad with the options)

The marketing of Porsche over the years has created a very good brand name, significantly better than BMW. Go back a few decades and I would have said that BMW had everything going for it, their cars were formed from granite and they had prestige It was an achievement to be able to own a BMW. We had a 728i when I was around 14 or 15, so 30+ years ago, it looked like it would kill you just for looking at it with that shark nose, that's when I became a petrol head, it was glorious. Porsche on the other hand were a specialist car manufacturer making drivers cars from papier-mâché that had personality and we all know that goes a long way. They were pretty invincible on a race track too.

Now I perceive Porsche as a quality product, great engineering and I aspire to own one. BMW well, I'm sorry you're quality has suffered for the sake of being widely affordable to the masses, yet you market yourself as a prestige brand and of a drivers car, yet embracing everything that makes you not a drivers car, what next front wheel drive

The only Porsche that I like is the 911, the rest are plain ugly in my eyes and I wished they had not devalued the brand by introducing the entry level or 4x4 off road models, but that is market forces I guess. I do worry about the number of catastrophic engine failures that seem to plague them.

Not a big fan of Porsche but was tempted by a Cayman before i got the Z
While it was good to drive, I found the interior dated to say the least and didn't think I could live with that long term

But without the Cayenne, they might not possibly exist or have been able to afford to develop the 911 as they have

Not the E89 really, more of a GT/cruiser
