Porsche...I don't get it

Ye at the end of the day... who cares it drives like a beast and is a 911. If it drives fantastically, well then thats enough for me and drive fantastically it does.

The point I was making was people offer an opinion about the 911's handling when I'm sure they've never driven one in anger or not at all, anyway daren't p*ss sars off anymore she only lives about 12 miles from me and I don't want her down here in her engineers overalls and big boots stamping on me

Yes I agree. Never seen so much anti 911 anywhere apart from on here. TBH most with no driving experience with them, find it incredible.

But fair doos Kryton!

I don't think it is particularly anti-911 on here. I love em :D

But some of those who don't are ex-owners so we shouldn't just dismiss what they say out of hand.

As always no offence taken, I have my big girl pants on :D

and as a penultimate point, I don't believe anyone has argued on here that the current 911 doesn't drive exceptionally well and finally I don't wear overalls and have I size 6 feet :P

I'd love a 911, a turbo would be my choice. I could find the money if I was to take on the mother of all bank loans ,but I cannot justify it to myself when I can run my Z4 so cheaply in comparison. I also have a motorcycle habit so 3 toys is enough for one man.I could stretch to a 996 turbo, 2002-2004 facelift version, but I'm holding myself back. If I did get one, I'd keep it til I died. Not having a garage also stops me getting one, I filled it in to give me an office at home. Not sure I'd want to keep it outside 24/7. One day........................................

Not to mention that I would get very tired of the "can't afford the real one" comments.

Any one who says that is obviously a moron. The Boxster is the yard stick for soft tops in it's sector and is still the best overall packaged, it has class leading steering, brakes, handling, practicality, build quality, badge etc.

People who say that sort of thing are just sheep repeating J Clarksons comments without even driving one

What do you mean by "mask the effect"? In OEM guise, my Z4MC had lots of lifting and pitching under acceleration and braking. Now that I've fitted an aftermarket suspension kit and uprated the ARBs, the lifting and pitching has been almost completely eliminated (with its present settings for road use). Are you suggesting that I've only "masked" the effects of the movement of the polar moment of inertia, rather than actually restricted the movement to a smaller area by stiffening up the suspension at the front etc.?

A gyroscope is the classic example of the principles of the polar moment of inertia of mass, I am unsure how this effect relates to mass transfer under acceleration and giving extra grip to the rear wheels with a rear engine layout which was your original point, please enlighten me

Mass transfer occurs under acceleration and thus the C of G moves, if you upgrade the springs and increase the overall stiffness it is blindingly obvious that you will have less deflection, however the mass transfer still occurs....ergo the original problem remains.

None of the above matters in the real world, go drive a modern 911 like you've stole it and all that "engine in the wrong place stuff" goes out of the window.

Owned Cayman, Boxster and 911 and I would take the 911 any day. The traction and feel is just better, the car has to be driven a certain way to get the best out of it(just like the Z4M) and is all the better for it.

I've driven a 996 911 on track and I was unimpressed. The acceleration was brisk but without drama or excitement, and it wallowed and floundered somewhat in the bends. I don't doubt a turbo or GT3 would be mind blowing but my experience certainly did not sell the brand to me.

A standard 996 is a good road car, it's not a track machine out of the box. 996's are getting on a bit, a fresh one is still pretty good on track, but you can't compare a car which is at the minimum of 7yrs old, its bound to feel a bit loose.

I prefer the Z4mc as track car too, but when the 996 first came out in 1999 it was better than almost everything else and performed very well on the track, but comparing it to a 6 yr old Z4mc isn't really comparable. The 996 wasn't even been produced then and by the end of its life cycle, the game had moved on a lot. Comparing a 6 yr old 997 to the Z is more valid. Try comparing the 991 to the Z4mc and see how that stacks up :)
However none of above means the 911 isnt a greater car, its engaging and unique drive which has endured for the last 40 yrs

I've witnessed the evolution of GT3 911s indirectly by competing against 996 and 997 GT3s on various tracks. The former is a good match for my ///M and, with a bit of bravery, can be beaten through the bends, whilst the latter is a distinctly superior track car to mine (although not one that can't be beaten when driven by a numpty  )

Yeah, the corner entry speed of the Z4MC is better than the 996, the 996 doesn't have the composer compared to the more modern Z4MC, but I really enjoyed the 996 as a road car and still would now, even if it isn't as fast. I had my 996 in 2004 and haven't drive one for a while but still remember it fondly. I remember when I first picked the car up from the dealers, driving home it started to absolutely lash it down , but the feel through the wheel and chassis allowed me to drive the car as if I'd owned it for years, only been in the car 5 minutes, but I was able to drive the wheels off it from the get-go in the pouring rain such was the tactile feel and nature. It was on that first unaccompanied drive home I realized what the 911 was all about. On previous test drives I wasn't that impressed and felt the 996 was a bit bland and not that fast. It was actually my wife which convinced me to swap the TVR Tamora for a 911 because I found it a bit bland. Who knew?
