Porsche Cayman....what's the verdict???

Mate of mine seems to have the same daily thoughts as you Greg and verdict we've come up with is yes but with the LSD kit you can get for them. Apparently with this added its like night and day. Not bad second hand prices these days either so the coin may be significant but not too harsh.

The Cayman S was ranked better than the Z4MC consistently when the two cars hit the market in 2006. Though I already had an early Z4 roadster, I gave the Cayman a try and indeed found it better than the Z4M in a couple of areas: handling was much more supple, especially with PASM added, and being over 6' I found it a bit roomier (I fit in the Z4MC, but it's a near thing).

The big minuses for the Cayman were its lack of power compared to the S54 and lack of slippy diff to help put the power down, combined with a significantly higher price. The difference in price considerably overshadowed the difference in performance, and my feeling at the time was that a Z4M with coilovers added was a much better value.

Time and depreciation have leveled the playing field a bit, and currently there's a 20k mile Cayman S for sale here that's priced at pretty much exactly what I'd expect for my 20k M Coupe. And without starting a values thread yet again, I suspect the Z4MC will continue to hold it's value a bit better than the Cayman, based on the history of the Z3MC and Porsche's entry-level models in general (cf 968, Boxster, etc).

And for the Cayman, there continues to loom the spectre of the IMS problems. Reportedly fewer than 1% of Caymans have been affected and none since the mid-2007 update to the seal, though the only sure thing is the 2009+ cars with DFI engines (meaning the S, not the base model).

Good post there epbrown.

Looking at all available options what suggestions would people come up with for the following parameters:

Sporty looking
Powerful
Doesn't have to be practical
Gets around 28-33mpg
Upto £20000
Reasonable servicing costs at indie/dealer

The reply...a Z4C/Z4MC which I already have, however, when the thought of changing cars crops upin the mind its does not go away...any further advances on a Cayman S....

Aye, and there's the rub: I change cars fairly often and I've had the Z4 M Coupe longer than I've owned anything. I feel a similar itch for a change, especially since my commute is going to go from a quick 5 mile jaunt to a 30 mile hike outside the city. I worry that the M Coupe might be a bit harsh for 2 hours of traffic every day, and my other car - a Fiat 500 - will be out of it's element. I've been eyeiing these:

...but the Porsche's potential issues, no matter how scarce, give pause. Really, the only car I'd replace the Z4MC with without hesitation is a 997 turbo (the turbo/GT3 engines have no issues) but that's a big leap.

Yes, definitely a big leap to a turbo or GT3.

Other than a Cayman S or an Evora even though the latter is 30k plus, I've also looked at an E90 335d or 535d, an Audi A8 4.2 quattro TDI....

Ultimately for the parameters set out above is there a better option than the car that we all currently own...

Solely in the interest of helping you research this question, I bought a Boxster S a couple of days ago. I'll present my findings down the line. :)
