Porsche Cayman....what's the verdict???

I'm unfortunately starting to have thoughts about switching my Z4C for a Cayman as I seem to be drawn to this motor on a daily basis.

Wondering if anyone has had any experience with it, either the 2.7 or 3.4s, any opinions or verdicts on both would be great.

Also any information on running costs, service costs and intervals and all of your usual monetary based information would be top notch.

Looking at the stats the Z4C seems comparable to the 2.7 and the Z4MC seems comparable to the 3.4s in terms of performance.

I can see me shelling out some coin in the very near future....

Always liked these cars Greg and they are supposed to be very good especially in the S form...

I was surprised to learn though that they dont come with an LSD? That would be something I would want handling that sort of power I think. Although as with the zed im sure there are after market solutions such as quaiffe.

I was very tempted with one before I bought the coupe last year but the servicing costs and known problems with the engines / oil seals in boxters not being covered by warranty just kind of put me off. Not sure if the problem even exists with the Cayman but still kind of put me off.

Yeah I have read up on those problems and a friend had an early Boxter in the 2.5 and she had issues with oil seals.

Its just an idea at the moment, I find myself on Pistonheads looking at various cars daily, yesterday it was a VKR8, the day before a Lotus Evora!

I see that your coupe has now sold? Did you get what you wanted for it? A massive shame as it was a hell of a coupe, although onto new beginnings I see in the form of a S20 M Sport, still looks the part!

VXR8.. 500BHP supercharged V8... They had one in at Topgear Performance the other week fitting an exhaust to it.. Sounded awesome. But the fact that it is a Vauxhall would put me off.

Lotus Evora is another lovely motor, not sure if I could live with it every day though. I think if I were you I would be looking at an MCoupe or the Cayman S

Yes, I sold the coupe over the weekend. I got what it was advertised for but that's different from what I wanted for it. Sign of the times thought isnt it.

I will be really really really sad to see it go but I am getting a company car (the new zed) and with saving for a wedding and new house I had no choice but to let it go. :( The new one will be nice though Im sure. Just hope I dont miss the power too much :driving:

I recon thats goin to be my next car... If i dont end up with an e89.

The oil seal issue was with early boxters... Dont think the cayman or newer boxters had that issue.

But they do have a long list of other problems... Worth getting a warranty with it!

Nice looking & outrageous good handling car, but u need the top power model as used to upset the lesser powered models in my old chipped TDi 170 by keeping up with them well into 3 figures

If the Z4MC wasn't available, then I'd have had the Cayman S.

Although when I bought my Z4MC, the 'equivalent' Cayman S was about £5k-£7k more expensive.

I think the consensus is the Cayman S if you ca live with the servicing/repair cost, similar to that of the Z4MC I guess.

Its the same case when looking at older AMG Merc's, Maserati's, M3's, ISF's etc etc....the day to day cost isn't the issue but when something goes bang you are screwed!

Thanks for the advice

I'm not sure whether that key is genius or incredibly sad! But who cares when you've got a 911 :D

My friend had a new Cayman S, a lovely car but the oil seal went although very low mileage was out of warranty so had to fork out, I'll try and find out how much it cost him, he's moved onto a Mercedes C350 now and says it's almost as quick!

Wouldn't put me off having one, just something to be aware of !

Just spoke to my friend, it wasn't the oil seal that went it was the oil separator, it goes instantly and smoke gushes out of the exhaust, as the oil and fuel mix, not good.

Although his Car was only 2 yrs and a month old, 5000 miles on the clock Porsche wouldn't pay for it, it cost just under £300 for the repair.

Mate of mine seems to have the same daily thoughts as you Greg and verdict we've come up with is yes but with the LSD kit you can get for them. Apparently with this added its like night and day. Not bad second hand prices these days either so the coin may be significant but not too harsh.

I took the plunge on a Cayman S in December last year. I have to say it is by a long shot the best car I have ever driven. Everyone knows that when you own a car like this, you have to expect high bills for certain things, but the pleasure of driving (and looking at yourself in a shop window - come on, we all do it!!!!) far outweighs this.

Enough has been said about the acceleration and handling of this car, and I can confirm it is spine tingling. I suppose I am well placed to compare the Cayman S with the Z, and I have to say that the Cayman is put together way better. The build quality is second to none. I still have my Z, and it is impossible really to fairly compare both. The cabin is rattle free, and the doors close with a satisfying thunk - this was always my biggest gripe with my Z, the tinny doors. The acceleration is just never ending and it pulls away in 6th like you wouldn't believe.

I have had more looks and comments in the Cayman in 3 months than I did in the 7 years in the Z. If you like that sort of thing you will love the Cayman, I have had loads of people comment on it while I am filling up at the petrol station, a place I frequent regularly......

As far as running costs are concerned, I get around 24mpg around town and I can hit 30mpg on a run if I don't rag it and put the cruise on at 75!

Servicing is noot as bad as you might think, with 20,30 and 40k services costing around £2, 3 and £400 respectively fom an indy.

I have never experienced any tramlining and although with the 19" wheels I have the ride is hard, it is never harsh, and it thuds over bumps in the road rather than crashes over them, however I do avoid certain roads in cardiff due to the pot holes. The standard 18" wheels will obviously improve this a little

Overall I love the Cayman and I agree that you need to go for the S (3.4) over the standard model. It drives beautifully, looks incredible and makes me smile everytime I am behind the wheel.

The only caveat I would put on it is to buy from an OPC (Official Porsche Centre) as you will get a full 2 year manufacturers warranty. I have already made good use of this (That is another long story....!) however Porsche in Cardiff were amazing. The car will also have had their 111 point check which gives you peace of mind.

If you have any more questions, I will be happy to help. Send me a PM with your email if you want and I will do what I can.

Well I honestly reckon it will be my next car as the 911 always seems a bit to far away with regards to price, altought I would like the 4 seats :headbang:

The thing thats always strikes me as well is after the first few years the deperication is very low , Its seems that they have been the same price now for ages but the miles are going up , lovely car would love one :) sort of feels like a natural progression

Thanks for all comments regarding the Cayman so far, particularly left98204 for that review.

The servicing costs aren't as bad as you would think, comparable almost to the Z if going to an indie, however, ridiculous if going to a dealer/stealer!

I got a 2 year warranty when I bought my Z a year ago and would most certainly get a warranty if deciding on getting a Cayman.

Food for thought I guess but once ideas like this get into your mind they do not go away!!

The porker key looks like a kids toy to me. Nasty. Starts a lovely car though :-)
