Porsche - a slippery slope?

I find myself looking at the Porsche now. It was the Cayman caught my eye originally before the Zed when i read it was the best sport car dollar for dollar... but I decided a BMW 6 cylinder convertible was what I needed. I love my Zed but

Now I find myself looking at boxsters...studying early bearing and cylinder casting defects & later solutions like 987.2 and 981. I feel I'm circling the drain on this 981... look, there goes my Mustang slowly around and around the outer edge

Ahhhh well there you have it....a Mustang is good at one thing, then no matter how long the road eventually a corner will need negotiating...it’s like Arnie and Stallone, bloody good at what they do but put them in a psychological thriller and then where are you..... :driving:

He’ll be back! :P

Arnie was better at Kindergarten Cop. The S550 Mustang actually has some surprising agility, IRS, big brakes, LSD, it's not your grampas Stang. But we digress... the Porsche 981 is really what I want to discuss.

:o Don't do it. In a world where most everything is good at what it is made for, what actually matters is not being perfect, AKA character.

I do like the Cayman but the Boxsters always have a whiff of poor mans Porsche about them to me and find it hard to tell the front from the back :o but then you don't look at it when driving :)

Tim.

Spend circa £50k you can buy the best Z4 off the shelf - what would the best on the shelf Porsche do to your wallet?

A fully specced 718 Spyder would jump quite nicely over £100k.... :o

I appreciate you all.
The stigma is real but who cares when you are throwing the car around the curves of a good mountain road? I always thought the Boxster was a girl's Porsche. But lots of people call the Z4 (i'm gonna say it :P ) a hairdresser's car. What matters is how they drive. And how they drive is how I got here > rear engine vs mid engine. Driving a mid engine sports car is the desire... living with a Porsche is the question. I certainly can't buy new. But I could buy a 981 and I find some lovely prospects around 40k usd.

Why is living with a Porsche an issue Scoot...? If it’s because of the brand itself then you’re missing out on some very fine machinery for....well....no reason whatsoever. If you can get into a 981 you’ve hit the sweet spot in the Boxster range. A 2.7lit with 265bhp will outclass a stock M in the twisties all day everyday, not on the straights as perhaps a touch light on power but just revving one to the redline with sports exhaust needs to be tried and the engine can take all the abuse you throw at it. I’ve not tried a 981 3.2S so can’t comment but I’d imagine they’re even better but a well driven 2.7 is a LOT of fun. Do it before you shuffle off.....tick that box. :driving:

I thought you had recently bought a 2008 987 S? In the UK you can get a lot of 981 S for c. £30k but nicely spec'd manuals don't come up especially often.

Nearly 3 weeks into ownership and no regrets here!
Down side is you might have to leave the house and test drive one, for real  A8AC5BFF-BB72-4534-99F6-010CA201F8CD.jpeg

The 08 failed a PPI :( After paying 560 usd to Porsche I told the owner what he should have told me  The search is back on....I can find lovely Z4 35i with 6spd MT with low miles... could put a tune on it and have a 400 hp Zed. :driving: But I'm hankerin for a 300 hp Boxa before they throw dirt on me face up. What's a guy to do? In my dreams I build another garage and buy both new. :D Shall I show you some of the cars I found?

Always. :D

The 08 felt like a failed relationship. I left her there at the stealership. Told the owner to collect her.
