Porsche - a slippery slope?

It's a sad day. The Zed is sold. At least it went to a British lady. I'll have to ask if she is a hairdresser

Never heard that, that's normally reserved for a Merc SLK isn't it?

Isn't it true of a Boxster too?

Soon after I got my 1st E86 someone I knew through work said he thought it was a hairdresser car - he wanted a 911.

So I asked him which one, and he said an Automatic Cabrio - how much more hairdresser can you get FFS?

[ref]Mr Tidy[/ref], [ref]scootr[/ref], It turns out we can all relax and enjoy our sports cars, it seems a Jeep is actually a Hairdressers car  . For the non-UK readers of this Google "Nicky Clarke Hairdresser".

So this got me to thinking maybe we could find some type of list on google :
Examples of hairdresser's cars:
Rover MGF (not the TF)
Mazda MX5 (although that car's reputation as being a fine handler is causing its popularity within the scissored-fraternity to wane)
Suzuki Vitara
Suzuki X90
Suzuki Jimny
VW Golf convertible
VW Beetle
Citroen Saxo (1.1 in Yellow only)
Land Rover Freelander (3dr petrol)
BMW Z3 (not M Roadster)
Mercedes SLK230
Renault Megane Convertible
VW Polo (in pastels only)
Peugeot 206CC

And finally this > In short then, a hairdresser's car is about style. And more specifically, about style and lack of substance. Substance is actively not desired. This is why a Z3 1.9 is a hairdresser's car, and a Porsche Boxster S is not.

Does that answer the question?

Getting down to some head to head comparison... This is making for a very interesting comparison as these cars were major competitors at the time. Easy to see the seat position in the Z is much further back with the inline 6 out front. The Boxster with it's forward seating position gives much more of a go cart feel to the driver versus a grand touring position of the Zed.
Hard to believe the Z is only 3 " longer WB.

[ref]scootr[/ref], Got to take issue with the Vitara, no style at all, it's just utilitarian and much the same as a fridge pretty reliable.

Makes sense, we can scratch that one from the list.

Well, it is a bit of a sad day. My Zed has flown the coupe with a nice middle age British bird at the helm. She will keep the plates. I think it's in good hands. :tumbleweed:

Thank you to everyone who helped Zeducate me - I could not have improved the car or enjoyed it as much without you.

Sad day for sure, but at least you've got the Porsche to console you!

But you'll need to update your signature now.

I'm going to attempt the comparison requested. I previously owned 2010 Z4 3.0i 6MT. Refreshed Bilstein 4 suspension and 17" Michelin PS4s trreads. Replaced with 2011 Porsche Boxster S sporting OEM type 19" Bridgestone RF tires.
Initial evaluation was the Porsche is more of a go cart driving experience. The Porsche transmitted more road surface information and it was capable of taking corners faster than the BMW. The Boxster was not as comfortable as the Z4 but there is considerably less body lean or roll. The mid engine improved balance allowing acceleration sooner and harder out of the corners. The 310 hp flat 6 is very responsive in the lighter car. The taller gearing has taken a bit to get used to.
I think both cars hit their mark in terms of design and function. The Z4 has a more street friendly gear ratio and a more comfortable ride. The Z4 seats and steering wheel were also more comfortable. The Z4 is a sporty car with emphasis on comfort which makes it a very capable luxury roadster.
The Boxster is a sports car with emphasis on a visceral driving experience. The hydraulic steering gives a good feel of the road. The electronically controlled suspension adjusts to every change instantly. To improve upon this system I installed a DSC sport suspension module. Simple plug and play fit made changing the computer module a 5 minute no tool job. This new computer has technology 10 years advanced upon the original. The regular mode is a ride that smooths the bumps out yet holds better in the corners often described as a more compliant ride. The sport mode is nothing short of amazing. The suspension is quicker to respond with dynamic control. The car is now elevated to superb handling. This is a driver's car :D

[ref]scootr[/ref], Good review, I've owned both at a slightly older age point but the review applies to my experience as well. Here's the thing, I couldn't live with the Porsche on the UK roads and then there's the very obvious specification differences etc. If you didn't like the Porsche I'd be very surprised. I've just had a look on the UK market and if we ignore that your Boxster is 2011 and pretend it's a year older it would still be almost twice the price of the Z4. Bang for buck - Z4 all day long.

Yes and no. It's more money but it is also more technology and ultimately more ability.
But to be fair I got the reactive suspension in the Porsche I didn't have in the Zed, although I read nothing but harsh reviews of the adaptive M suspension

You know something. I've been away from this forum for years. Ended up purchasing my first 911( something I always wanted as a boy) was amazing but with an upcoming remortgage/purchase we decided to get rid as was just not seeing the use. I'm glad I scratched that itch but guess what....here I am and looking for a Z again... Be it the M for sure đŸ˜‚IMG-20201008-WA0003.jpg

I just messed myself. That’s lovely, must’ve hurt to let it go. Welcome back though
