I think both have plus and minus points, I bought a roadster though did look for a coupe at the same time. I will admit cost came into it, the final choice came down to a decision with my other half. She liked the roadster I looked at the driving experience, hence the 2.5Si which got good reviews when launched. Sorry boys but she thinks the coupes for old men, can't have her thinking I'm old, well not just yet :fuelfire:

I went out looking for a coupe (non m) and ended up with an MR. I felt that the convertible edged it over the coupe in terms of fun and saved me a couple of grand over an MC with no performance trade off. If I were running it as a track car I'd take the coupe but for road travel in speed and style there really is no contest. If I was old and ugly the coupe might make more sense...hehe

today at work a college referred to his wifes convertible mini as a pram top, not heard that expression before, thought it was quite funny

i very nearly bought a coupe...... tbh if i found a coupe in the same spec as mine at the time i wouldnt have hestitated getting one.... the convertible roof wasnt a deal breaker for me; coming from an S2000 i have already had my convertible fun.

The number of times i have had my roof down doesnt justify the increased premium i pay on insurance over a coupe.

Maybe time to resurrect this. How about making it a sticky so Newbie's can see it.
Also add 'Both' for the E89 guys.

Oops - didn't read the OP - this is not what you've got but what you would get.

I think aesthetics wise, the coupe is less balanced that the roadster. The long sloping line only highlights the short stubby rear. However on the roadster, the boot is extended a little more, countering the long nose. And there is the option of the hard top which itself has a neat little spoiler. Performance wise, the stiffness of the coupe may be better, but nothing can beat cruising around with the top down.

It's also a little unusual that the roadster was developed first prior to the coupe. Usually it's the other way around, right? Possibly showing that the roadster was designed to be just that. And the coupe was an afterthought... :fuelfire: THIS LAST BIT IS JUST A BIT OF A JOKE.

I'm abstaining because this is a pointless poll ! People are bound to vote for what they've got and as the Roadster was on sale for 3 years longer in many different engine sizes compared to the Coupe surprise surprise it sold more.

I tell you what though - I get far, far more admiring glances in the M Coupe than I ever got in my roadster. The shape is just a lot sexier roof up or down in my opinion. I also think the E85 is starting to date rapidly now. It's been out a lot longer than the Coupe and it shows. That was one of reasons I sold it and I didn't buy an E89 because somehow they just don't do it for me.

Don't mistake me - I did 85k very happy miles in the E85 but it was time to move on and as soon as the Coupe came out I wanted one. I've not had one regret losing open top motoring at all.
+1

The Roadster is the more common car, therefore you can assume that there are more roadster owners on here, therefore the roadster is going to win this poll as the coupes are under-represented!

best of both worlds drive behind a coupe on a meet in a roadster.... admire the looks and the enjoy the sunshine at the same time !

Now it's all subjective I know, and I have just bought a coupe, but I just can't agree here. Always been a huge fan of both versions - but one of the reasons I bought the coupe is that (IMO) it's one of the best looking cars on the road, more so than the roadster. But like I say, I am biased. :D

I testdrove both back to back. They are both 2 seaters and with the roof up it was hard to notice any difference. So practicality doesn't really come in to it. After that it's whether you would rather the looks of the coupe or the ability to drop the roof.

The more I looked at the coupe, the more I think it's a bit off an odd shape. From 3/4 it looks amazing, but profile shots made me less and less certain. Started to remind me of a 1 series. :D

As I understand it Z1 was designed as a roadster, Z3 a roadster, Z4 a roadster and that's how they should stay. I love the look of the coupe to a point but if i wanted a fast coupe there're other cars i'd choose over the Z4. (having said that i don't want a coupe so that comment is pretty pointless)

For me it can only ever be convertible and for the record if the E89 had a ragtop i'd be even more happy. I think BMW spoilt the 3 series when they tinned the convertible. I prefer the shape of the E89 over the previous Z4, sorry guys but we all have our own preference, and i don't think a ragtop would work on the e89 shape.

Life should be lived in the fresh air and under canvas.

Those of you who can't take or don't take the lid off miss so much of a beautiful world.

Roofs are great on houses and that's where they should stay ! :)

Good point. The Z4 was designed as a convertible. Kerb weight for the coupe is 5-10kg more.

The coupe is a little more discreet and certainly makes sense if you do regular track days (faster steering and more steering wheel "chat". security etc.)

otherwise on the road I think the rag top is more enjoyable. Slightly more softly sprung (M variant), you enjoy the noise more too. A friend of mine has a hard top for his Z4 2.2 conv for winter so he's a winner both ways.

As far as i'm concerned though, the MC is just about one of the most beautiful car out there with it long nose and fat (ass) kamm style tail. Real classic proportions that few manufacturers are doing nowdays (although intereting to see the new Ferrari FF going down that route).
