Please have your rod bearings checked...

Hi - Can anyone recommend a good garage in Manchester to do this replacement?
Darren Wood in Stockport (Bredbury)?

I'd be very interested to hear whether any UK based members have had any experience of having the rod bearings replaced as a proactive preventative measure (rather than a reactive one).

I'm seem to remember £1000 being chucked around in previous posts.

anybody?
As a precaution, I had mine checked and replaced at 50k miles when I was having some other work done. They were pristine  I've forgotten what it added to the bill, but it wasn't a huge cost (at an Indy).
My car has been heavily tracked and driven hard on the road, but I routinely perform oil changes between schedule services and always use the recommended oil. How much effect that has had on protecting the bearing shells, I don't know....maybe I've just been lucky!

I think as mentioned earlier, the amount of E46 M3's that have cracked on to 150k miles, they can't be a disaster waiting to happen, but I'm a worrier, so any preventative maintenance I can bear in mind I will...

I've only got 26k on the car at the moment and it has reportedly never been tracked, I shouldn't have anything to worry about, but if I'm feeling particularly flush one month maybe I'll get it looked at..."a stitch in nine" as they say.

It's more about frequent oil changes and how it's warmed up / driven. Mine is a similar mileage and I've owned it practically from new and has never had more than 5k miles between regular oil changes. It also has never sat for long periods unused. A low mileage car that has not be used for long ages, can also lead to bearing issues. I've seen it on classic cars and motorcycles, no reason to think the zed would be any different. FWIW, Dr Vanos recommends a max of 7k between oil changes iirc.

If this was the case, how do you explain my high lead count before bearing change versus low lead count after bearing change? Oil change intervals are always between 3k - 6k miles. Still low lead count after 4 oil changes after bearing swap. Driving style haven't change prior to or after bearing swap. See my link below for more details.

There are no guarantees, every engine is different. All you can do is try and minimise the risk. Did you have it from new?

Agreed. I had it since 7k miles...so Almost new.

BMR in dartford charge around 1350 for S54 rod bearings shells with ARP bolts and new engine mounts. just had mine done on my MC

it was on 98k and some of the top shells were starting to wear and had copper showing.
