Plastic emergency key

Does anyone know what the plastic emergency key does? I mean, clearly it unlocks the doors but does it also enable the car to be started?

I have realized the folly of following the BMW-prescribed idea of carrying the plastic key in your wallet. If you leave your wallet in a taxi, and return to the taxi driver in the next 30 mins to find the wallet is nowhere to be found, you will have unwittingly ended up with someone else having possession of your wallet containing your plastic emergency key, and your name and address from your driving licence which is also in your wallet :headbang:

Does everything

And some people tape it to their car in a secret area, well seen a few in wheel arch liners over the years  (i dont steal cars  )

I keep it on the key ring. I figure it's a "swimming key" - when going to the beach you lock the electronic key in the car and take the plastic one with you. You can tie it to the string loop inside your boardshort pocket and go in the water with it.

while you guys talk about your winter tyres, its so hot here ive got 3rd degree sunburn after an hour with the top down. I love the winter driving coz i need the aircon cranked lately. Boardshorts and beach are the lifestyle down here!!

and great idea to mangozac, ive not thought of that. mine is hidden away with the spare key, didnt think it'd be very useful for anything.

Haha yep down here in the southern hemisphere the warmer weather is starting to kick in. My favourite experience yet is driving topless upon dusk on a hot day. Bring on Summer!

Absolutely!- though it's a sad fact that it's often too sunny and hot in the summertime to enjoy the roof down for long - but early morning and at dusk - absolutely magic..

The price for this fantastic weather? We get absolutely ripped off on car prices - for what we pay for a Z4 down here you could have bought 2 in Europe...

Cheers,

Nelson..

doesnt anyone read the manual???

it clearly says the plastic key is usable for everything.

when the car is locked and alarm protected you can turn the alarm off when turning the contact on to first stage.

I did! :D

@NFC: tell me about it - it's so annoying to keep reading all of the dirt cheap prices everybody else on here buys their Zs for!

A few weeks ago (I think like the first weekend of spring) it was a really nice day and even then driving around town at midday with the top down was almost unbearable. Highway would be ok with some wind to cool you down, but sitting at traffic lights with roasting sun and no shade isn't too pleasant. Of course, up here in Queensland it's been crappy quasi-rainy weather since then :(

Yes Australian car prices are terrible. If i lived in the UK, i would own an ///M for sure.
I ended up with the 3.0 as it was the only 3.0 or better Z within 2000Km of my Town for sale (and for you Europeans in the 20,000 pound plus price range).

I did a 3 hour top down drive along the highway 2 weeks ago, wearing only a singlet and sunny's, by the time i got to my destination (Airlie Beach) i was so hot and burnt i couldn't even go swimming at the beach  and decided to drive home with the top up and aircon CRANKING.

Maybe we need a page for regions (ie where Aussie's can talk about kangaroo's and the beach, and these european's can talk about rain and traffic etc)

as for the Topic off this thread.... i seem to have forgotton.

The price of cars in Oz is deliberatly higher, Its called payback :poke: For all the sporting trophys, the hot weather and turning Edinburgh into the next Oz capital.

Is the plastic key actually water proof? As in no immobaliser chip inside which can get effected if it got wet?

I went to beach last summer and between my car keys and phone the only item i would never leave on the beach unattended would be my car keys - so if its water proof i could put a swimming band through it and keep it on me!

It of course has an immobiliser chip in it as it's a fully functional key
I see no reason why it should get wet inside as it's a single piece plastic moulding.

Drop it in a glass of water for an hour and if it starts the car no problems. Better than being stood there in a carpark with a key that doesn't work

Thats the great idea CJ... i'll dig it out tonight and test it

I'd imagine as the immobaliser is a passive chip then it may not even mind a bit of water.... we have some passive RFID chips which we use at work which are fully water proof.
