Planning to start a Z4 Project - A few q's

I wasnt trying to knock the 2.0.. as its a great car..In city driving it will be more or less identical to its 6 cylinder counterparts. ..

Just to keep you going aquazi.

I don't have to drive in the "city" and I avoid motorways and arterial "A" roads like the plague.
But up here in God's country, on the roads I normally drive "just for fun" all those statistics become irrelevant. :driving:

MalcZ4, Whatever rocks your boat. If your happy about you're car then don't let anyone tell you differenly.

Back on topic... I agree to some extent regarding 19's. IIRC aquazi noticed some performance issues with his wheels.
You could however get, for example, geniune CSLs which are in fact lighter than stock 18's. These are however quote expensive at around £1.5k second hand, but going by the fact that you want to respray your car I'm assuming you have a healthy budget for mods.
Best thing you can do is to find out the weight of 18" wheels (IIRC its around 21/22kg each side) and then find 19's that are the same weight or less.
Key here is research...

Regarding respraying the car I would also recommend a wrap instead.... Cheaper, protects the paint and you can remove it easily when you get bored and feel like a change. With isses with getting stopped it's very easy to show the real colour as you can open the bonnet and show the police the colour underneath and/or the door shuts (if not wrapped).

+1 on the wrap, i like the stealth look matt finish. I saw a stunning E60 in vynil and it looked well cool, very stealthy and unique. White would also look good in a matt finish, easy to remove also. I think it will only cost around £1K to get a Z4 done.

I think the problem with 19" wheel comes more from the reduced aspect ratio and increased width rather than the actual weight of the wheels.

I like the idea of a Z4 project, just look at the supercharged Alipna thread to see how it can be done properly. Personally i would buy lightly damaged Z4 from a salvage yard and have it repaired. A respray, replacement bumpers/wheels etc will already be factored into the price rather than chopping up a perfectly tidy car to start with and spending a fortune.

andyleem, it should be an interesting project for you seeing as your previous ones were all hatches, keep in mind though that aftermarket tuning options for our cars are pretty limited but then again what you described you want isnt anything ground breaking.

Have you considered the 2.2 at all? It was only a pre-facelift engine but insurance should still be relatively low and the car will make a bit more power and sound nicer being a six cylinder and all.

To give you a few ideas heres a couple of threads with similar project Z4s from members here:

Thanks for the replies.
I think il look out for either a 2.2 or 2.5 then.

Just a few clarifications:

For the rear I will get 2006- bumper. Am I right in saying that if the bumper i find on ebay is from post 2006 then it'll definitely be the right one I need?
But I will also need facelift lifts for this to fit. How do i distinguish 'facelift' lights when searching on ebay etc?

For the front I will also get a Z4M bumper, but as far as im aware this is a straight swap..?

Looks like im getting this carbon diffuser: http://www.ca-at.co.uk/single_prod.php?prod_id=2768
I'll also get a quad exhaust fitted to suit..

What options are available for rear spoilers (top of the boot)? anything carbon around?

Thanks

Also looking at these coilovers: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/D2-RACING-COILOVERS-BMW-Z4-ALL-MODELS-04-INC-PB-TOPS-/250573803739?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item3a575cd0db
any opinions?

Why are you going to get a Z4M rear bumper and then get the diffuser? Either one or the other but both will require a lot of work for installation on a pre-facelift car. Some details here http://modgarage.net/project/alpina/modification/21/facelift-rear-bumper-tail-lights-and-headlights/ and http://modgarage.net/project/alpina/modification/19/bmw-aero-kit-carbon-fibre-rear-diffuser/

Hi
Sorry I meant I was going to get a facelift rear bumper then add on the diffuser?
Do you mean it would be better to just get a Z4M bumper like here? http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y244/330Lover/Car%20Show/_MG_9243.jpg

Also does anyone know what boot spoiler kit is on this? http://modgarage.net/image/184/alpina-roadster-s-finished.jpg

I think you will find it a major ballache trying to fit facelift rear lights to a pre-facelift car. It needs to be completely rewired and have a new control unit fitted.

How much are the cheapest facelift cars now?

I've decided on a 2.2 as the insurance is cheaper than the 2.0!

Looking for a 2003/2004 2.2 SE with ideally red leather for around £8000
Wheels £1500
Rear Bumper £80
Front Bumper £200
Rear Lights £100
Coilovers £500
Spraying of parts and fitting £350
Carbon Difuser £200
Some kind of boot spoiler - up to £300
Pearl white vinyl wrap £1200.

Total approx: £12,500

Interesting project.
Can't see I'd spend that much on mods on a 2.2 (says the guy who's changed everything on his car...lol) £4,500 on an £8k car. You'll end up with a £6 to £7k resale value

Some observations:

Red leather is rare. If you go that route try to get ///M sport seats as they are way better.

The CF diffuser is nearer £370 if you mean facelift OEM.

Avoid the boot spoiler - they are generally considered ugly and imho don't add to the lines

If you go coilovers and aftermarket wheels you'll need a full geo set up at £100+ as Zed are difficult

Wouldn't it be cheaper to respray the whole car than £350 part spraying and a £1,200 wrap ie £1,550? I had a complete Jeep 2 tone custom painted for £600 inc., under bonnet, inside doors, etc.

Any event sounds and exciting project to get into.

Ah nice one. The quote was from TotallyDynamic and actually worked out at around £1500 inc VAT, so I think i'l look around a bit more!
