phone cradle popping out...

.....as the title suggests, its not stopping in place in the centre drop down.

The car came without a cradle, only the push-in oddments tray. The oddment tray kept popping out of place, so i thought id buy a used cradle to fill the space (and hopefully have it stay in place!) cos the fact that i knew the base in the dropdown was in the 'raised' position made my OCD itch!

I dont even WANT to use the cradle, its just there cos i feel like there should be one in the dropdown - bmw dont list one for my phone - HTC Desire HD.

The push button release for the removal of the cradle seems weak and as such may be the cause but i cant tell if the plastic 'hook' holding the cradle in is fully engaging as the workings are covered up once the cradle is in place.

Or is it the spring loaded base (that insists on being in the raised position) actually TOO strongly sprung and pushing the cradle out? :violent1:
Should the base lock down when no cradle /oddment tray is in position?

Has anyone had this problem, and what did you do about it? Thanks

Hi

If you can remove the ejector box (the mechanism that releases the oddments tray), you will see that it pivots at the front . The ejector part is sprung loaded and should have approx 10mm of travel in it. If it doesn't try removing the entire ejector assy from the car (require removal of rear bulkhead console trim where armrest stows when not in use) to remove harness to ejector box. Harness is connected next to Sat Nav/CD Changer area on offside of car - i.e behind drivers seat if RHD.

I think the ejector box can be disassembled with care, as it has torx screws and clips holding it together IIRC.
You might find it is one of the plastic clips / tangs that has snapped off and is trapped in the ejector mechanism preventing it from depressing fully.

I only noticed this when I fitted my Iphone 3G ejector box and Iphone 4 cradle this weekend. The ejector boxes (although appear strong) do have many little clips etc that are quite fragile.

Hope this helps in sorting that out.

Forgot to say - removal of ejector box is relatively easy if you have a flat plastic blade or trim tool. Ease it between the ejector box and surrounding trim. The clips will click when they release. Or alternatively, from drivers seat, pull box towards your chest (gently) and lift when you feel it release from the trim. Repeat for the other side and it should release.
They are quite tight so take care when doing this.

Or - throw away the oddments tray, see someone about your OCD, or change cars. :P

Only kidding. Hope this also helps.

My iPhone 3G cradle did the same ( in the updated eject box ) from installation
and then again the new iP4 cradle ( after minor surgery ) also wouldn't sit in, and lock down

Solution for both a solid thump with the hand ( fist ) at the rear that is plug end and after a couple of blows it locked down fine

Thanks for info gents! Will have a go at disassembling the ejector box, and see how I get on!
