Petrol Prices!

I filled up my car yesterday first time after both fuel duty and VAT increased :x . Shell V-Power is now £1.349 a litre. It costs me 20 pence a mile (average 30mpg). I drive the Zed to work 5 days a week (48 miles round trip), weekly fuel bill is now £48 (£2,304 a year).

didnt the governemtn state they would have a variable tax on the petrol in their pre election - so as fuel prices go up they would reduce the tax?! yet another lie by the goverenment.

I filled up before the price hike.. and still have 3/4 tank left so hopefully i wont need to top it up again till the end of the month.

I also made a point of filling the tank right up before the recent price rises. I'm convinced we'll see £1.50 a litre at some point this year (2011). :x

Petrol prices may be what they are, but it's not going to stop any of us filling up our cars is it? Filling up the RRS is £130!!!!

You should see the heating oil prices ... they have doubled in 3 weeks, a tank has now gone from £1000 to over £2200.

Petrol prices rises are nothing compare to that :x

Agreed! I knew when I bought the car that the only way was up as far as prices are concerned I guess it's just the leap into nearly 1.40 a litre seems massive and we all know it's tax that doesn't go back into transport...even with these prices it's still cheaper for me and my girlfriend to take the M up to Liverpool and back rather than go by train for the weekend...madness

but will you not drive less? less personal mileage?

i'm sure i heard that petrol sales have actually gone down

I encourage everyone I know to drive some POS green car that gets 50+ miles to the gallon...
That will leave more gas for the rest of us that driving is something more than getting from point A to point B....

Still waiting for them to take the tax rise off petrol they put on when they dropped Vat to 15%, the vat went back to 17.5% and now upto 20% but we just take the financial battering, I'm really suprised we have not yet seen major routes and the such blocked by protesting haulage companys.

Haulage firms can get their fuel in France and have a special deal anyway with regards to the duty element.

I feel we all need to be pro active , if we all by from the cheapest supplier in our area , that may help and here is a link to find the cheapest petrol in your area, https://passport.fubra.com/site/pp/signup/?passback=a%3A1%3A%7Bs%3A8%3A%22redirect%22%3Bs%3A92%3A%22http%253A%252F%252Fwww.petrolprices.com%252Fmembers%252F%253Fsearch%253Dg742bw%2526range%253D20%2526fueltype%253D1%22%3B%7D , where I live the difference in price is as much as 13 pence a litre

The problem is just that... :fuelfire:

Most cars now are diesels returning 50MPG, and many older less economical cars have been swapped out for newer (again mostly small economical petrols and diesels) under the scrappage scheme.

As a result, over the last 12-18 months the demand for car fuel in terms of total gallons per month has probably dropped in the UK, assuming the number of cars on the road is moreorless the same, which means the tax revenue the government has received has also dropped...so they put taxes up to make up the shortfall.

That's my theory anyway.

Sometimes the French really have the best ideas :)

Commuting 3 days per week on the bicycle from now on, saves me 3700 miles per year and reduces my fuel bill by about £1000.
I've been commuting by bike every day for the past few years, saves me 11 miles/day ~2500 miles/year (45wks/year)

2500 miles @ 30mpg = 83.3 gallon(UK)
83.3 gallon(UK) = ~380litres
380 litres @ £1.279/litre = ~£490

So, I'm saving almost £500 a year by cycling rather than driving to work. Just a shame I've spent ~£550 on a new bike in the past 12 months and £??? on maintenance and consumables lol. It's good to put an actual financial figure on it though, although there's also the health benefits and I actually enjoy it more than a driving commute most of the time :)

Ouch!!! :o

You are paying £1.275 / liter for petrol in the UK?!
Holy crap that is incredibly expensive - at least 50% higher than what we are paying in the "other" hemisphere.
Then again, our cars are a lot more expensive
