Petrol Lawnmower

Afternoon all, as the title says I just need a bit of direction as to the best mower for my budget. I have one already but having recently moved I’d like to get a better one. Budget is £400ish and it must have a rear roller for stripes, also the best place to get one. I do have a local guy that can cut the rather large lawn for £22 and take away the cuttings but not having much to do at the moment I’d like to do it myself. TIA

The best lawnmowers by a long shot are Honda, the models with a rear roller leave excellent stripe, they are however very heavy to manouvre.
They heve a good warranty period BUT it is dependant on dealer annual service being carried out, again silly money for what they do, I do that myself and the one I have now is around 12 years old.

As I said earlier - have fun with the grass, my advice avoid Hyundai or P1Pe - I have one and its a pain, every service place by me will not touch them, stating they are a pain to get parts for.

My neighbour swears by mount field / Webb or John Deere, if I had my choice I would go for a Cobra with Honda lump - https://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p2334524.m570.l1313&_nkw=honda+petrol+mower&_sacat=0&LH_TitleDesc=0&_odkw=petrol+mower&_osacat=0

This is what i use, bit pricey but they leave nice stripes, i found mine for £50 in need of some attention to the pulley/belt area

Than you everyone for your input and you to Steve
I’ve been looking at a Mountfield Honda powered mower so that tally’s up with what a few of you have said

I’ve used this company before, no issues and very keenly priced as far as I remember

Thanks Andy

I bought a used Honda isy with a shagged deck for £15. Spent £150 on new deck and a few service items and we now have a £400 + mower. It cuts beautify and really rams the grass in the bag. Hi da engines live for ever.
I thought you'd get a ride Ed, lord of the manor an all😁😁

I had an Izzy and a Mountfield with a B&S engine.

The Mountfield is 25 years old now and still runs like a dream. I keep thinking about replacing it, but it's running fine.

The Izzy had a few problems, then rusted away. The motor was done anyway, so it was scrapped.

You won’t learn will you Fred, keep plodding round bongo’s scrapyard for junk….that’s where your dashboard woodworm chums came from remember…. :poke:

I paid £150 on eBay for a very old, but working in perfect order, Ransomes Marquis 61. It has a huge cutting width & leaves great stripes & always starts on the 2nd pull. The guy selling was only 5 miles away. :)

My P1PE has a 20 inch cut and leaves great stripes, has elec start and looked a bargain when I bought it but never again.

You need at least 18 inch cut for that lawn, mine is hard work to push if the drive comes off which seems to be a popular thing to happen.

I would get a used ride on for £500 and it will save you a lot of time - https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/294277034875?hash=item448447337b:g:cpoAAOSw7mVg8JZ5

The only issue is that you will need a petrol strimmer to get the grass down to a length the ride on or self propelled machine will cut at the end of winter or if you have had a month of rain.

Are the stripes to encourage the sheep to run in a straight line?

This works better at keeping them straight.....and less work for the operator. :)

I think I’d rather buy a new one but I might take a look on EBay to see what’s about

Time isn’t a problem, I have plenty of that but I’d definitely want a self propelled one. Not interested in a ride on as I’m quite happy with the exercise
