I don't think your car defines whether you are a Petrol Head - you can be one whatever car you have!
After all your choice of car is limited by factors other than enthusiasm - like budget, practicality, annual mileage, and many others.
I've always loved cars and bikes - I used to read Autocar and Motor magazine every week in W H Smith when I was still at school and knew the Ferrari Daytona was the quickest car either had tested for over 5 years, but my 1st car was still a MK2 Cortina because that was the best I could afford at the time!
If an E89 works for you great, but to me it doesn't define whether you are a Petrol Head or not.

From looking at the replies on here, I think that the E89 is car cr that a enthusiast might own but not all owners will be enthusiasts, I think this will change as the car ages and it will be regarded more and more as an enthusiasts car. It has the right ingredients such as classic beautiful lines and a relatively short build period, also I think the hot models will gather more of a following. I think it will go the same way as the E46 in that to start with they were only regarded by some as a ph car and more as an exec cruiser apart from the m3 and now they are sort after and maintained by PHs. I’m really looking forward to a second ownership to a car that requires no mods as it has all the looks, bells and whistles I require, More than adequate performance and a robustness that will help keep me in the Black.
I doubt wether somebody who isn’t a car enthusiast would buy a z4 in the first place (any model)
There’s tons of ordinary saloons/hatches that would be far more efficient in just getting from A to B, I don’t know why they’d choose a relatively impractical 2 seater that’s not particularly cheap to run unless they possessed more than a fleeting passion for such a niche vehicle :?

I had a parcel delivered to work the other week and very nearly couldn't fit it in the car! Wouldn't go in the boot, and the only place I could get it was the passenger seat, but it was an awkward fit!!!
To me, a ph is someone who can talk figures (bhp, torque etc) and enjoys tinkering with the car. I am neither, but I like to be in something a bit "special", which, although mine is only a 2011 20i (not a 35i), feels special to me, because the roads aren't full of them. My other aspirational car is a Boxster, so this shows my level of motoring wish list.
Had a similar discussion with some of the Piston Heads fraternity at a meet at the Ace Cafe awhile ago. Group consensus at the time was that a Petrol Head could be defined as either:
A car enthusiast - so not necessarily fast cars, but someone who takes pride in a particular marque - this could be anything from a Bond Bug to a Beetle
A sports car enthusiast - started off defining minimum BHP figs but that turned into a shouting contest and would have ruled out half of the classic sports car from the 50's to the 70's so it was then decided it was better defined by 0-60 in which case anything 7.5 seconds and below to 60 was a reasonable sports car time.
In truth and as mentioned by someone else, your own life and commitments could constrain even the most devoted Petrolhead to purchase a Vauxhall Corsa over a Caterham so probably the ultimate definition of a Petrolheads Car is actually the owner not the actual vehicle?
Anyhow from a personal perspective I would say the e89 is a Petrol Heads car, all derivatives are pretty rapid, its fit for purpose as a sports car/GT based upon the classic roadster style shape i.e. long bonnet, tiny boot, two seats which are close to virtually sitting on the rear wheels. Plus its whole focus is geared towards that sports/GT style, however whilst some (including my wife) view the e89 as impractical I have managed to get a weeks shopping in the boot and also use it as my daily driver
