Well there are cars out there that are great cars but not particularly enthusiasts car, or fast cars that don’t inspire that certain petrol head following, I personally think a cayman S is more of a ph car than a base 911 because of its dynamics etc, I was just wondering the same about the e89 compared with say a e46 m3 etc.....Maniac said:

I seem to of not to of put my question in a clear way, would people say that the E89 is generally owned by enthusiasts? I mean no slight on the car or the owners, I just wondered if e89 owners are generally car people? I would say that e85/6 owners are more car people than the equivalent SLK or Boxster owner but I think a cayman owner would be a car guy....

What constitutes "a car guy " or "petrolhead" :? someone who buys a certain car that fits a perceived genre :? or someone who buys a car they cherish & more importantly enjoy driving more than talking about to friends or reading about in magazines .
Personally id take any E89 over any TVR simply because their design does nothing for me & id struggle to tolerate their deficiencies .
Does that make me less of a petrolhead ? :?

Jeez everyone seems so defensive... lt me try another track... every single guy I know that owns a tvr, cateram, noble is part of a car forum, group, community... are all e89 owners the same? I just trying to gauge the level of community with the e89, I obviously like the car or I wouldn’t be buying my second one... but if I was broke down at the side of the road in a tvr( I know.. very likely) every single guy in a tvr would stop and offer assistance, would every e89 owner stop to help another e89? I suspect the guys in here would but I’m not sure most e89 owners are part of a car community
There is no way that every E89 owner is a member of a forum or club. I doubt that every E85/86 owner is a member of a forum or a club either.
There is probably a high percentage of owners on this forum that are here to find out about problems with their car and then stuck around.
The cars owners that you have listed are probably members of forums and clubs to find out how to fix them as well and as they possibly need more work to keep them on the road there are more of these owners members of clubs and forums.
TVRs, Caterhams and Nobles are not your run of the mill cars either that you could find in Arnold Clark or the like unlike BMWs.
There is probably a high percentage of owners on this forum that are here to find out about problems with their car and then stuck around.

I am a car guy. Been to track schools, love driving at the limit. I select interesting cars with an emphasis on handling and somewhat on power and it has to look pretty good. I go to races. I am not fanatically knowledgeable but I am a techie person. I even read U.K. Car magazines in addition to the usual American ones. For most of my life cars were pretty slow but of course it was all relative.
I don't do mods I would rather just try to buy a better car. I don't try to do much work on it but would like to have a car lift in a nice big garage with A/C. I would also love to live where one can get to European roads through a big tunnel!
My 35i meets all my needs. Traffic is heavy and crowded. It is faster than really necessary. The car is fun and quite versatile. The Porsches are either too expensive to bother with now or too small and imo too harsh. I had a couple of them. If I lived near good mountain roads I would still be interested in one but for occasional back road trips from here, the E89 works better than most. Nowadays the sport roadster is redundant because bigger cars are so much better than in the days of the early English Sports car and the early BMWs so this will be my last one, i think.
That mix of interests will be different for every one of us here. On this forum, I do sense a big interest in appearance features. I know your petrol is expensive so there is that. I am not sure what driving in the countryside is like there in the U.K.
So compared with normal people, I am a car guy, who sometimes bores normal people who have never been to Watkins Glen or Darlington and never will understand the need to downshift.
