Does anyone know what this could be?. I was polishing the car at the weekend....for it then to rain :x and noticed the peeling. Its matt underneath but no rust or chip. Its like a thin clear coating?.
i have the usual stone chips and going to try the Chipex product so not sure if this would work for the other issue.

It is the clear coat coming off.

Seems to affect red cars for some reason, especially on mini's

Not sure how i haven't noticed it before but must have got bigger. Would the chipex paint work on that do you think?

100% lacquer peel.

Factory paint shouldn’t do that however, and so that panel may have had a poor respray done by a bodyshop.

Same thing happened to me after I left a car wash.

Was gonna fix it but sold the car before I got around to it.

Looks the same doesnt it. I think the person i had bought it off did have the front bumper re-sprayed but doesnt look right to the rest of the car. Cant afford to get it done this now so need to find a product for a DIY job this now.

That looked a great colour you had

Cheers man, it’s called Montego Blue. Used to come up nice after a good wash and polish.

I wouldn’t bother with a quick fix as it is likely to happen on other parts of the panel (which would mean you would continuously be touching up the paint).

I took mine to quite a few body shops and the average quote of a front bumper respray was £250-£300.

However some were adamant that in order to get it matched properly I would need a front end respray (bumper, bonnet and wings) which would cost up to £1,000.

From the pic you’ve supplied, yours doesn’t look too bad and so probs doesn’t need a front end spray, however just giving you the heads up.

Really appreciate that and if that sort of cash then not too bad. As you said i will prob just wait as a few other bits may appear and then i can get the chips done as well.

you can 'fill' the hole with laquer but the blemish will not disappear. It may stop it spreading though because it will, as water creeps under it. Can of laquer, spray some into the lid and apply with a small artists brush. ( no, before someone jumps in, not a small artist, a small brush that an artist would use! OK? )

Do you think the Chipex kit would work on it then?

I may be wrong but isn't chipex for stone chip or gravel rash sized damage? It probably would work but if you used their applicator you would be there a very long time!

I think it is supposed to be used for that. Just thinking it might fill and cover it with the paint touch up which will have lacquer in it?. it looks bigger than it is. As mentioned above i might just wait and get the front re-sprayed at some point. Just thought a temp cover up may have worked. Thank tho Jl-c. might buy a bigger Artist brush :)
