PCV recall in the US for 3.0si zeds…

I’m on my phone so links might be a bit weird or not formatted - but full story here:

https://apple.news/AMdfyPWTYT8ewO9OJXxiZXA

Plus direct link to NHTSA paperwork…

Not sure if this recall will make it over to the UK and I’m not entirely sure what the PCV does?

It's been an issue for years for most BMWs with the N52 engine.

https://bmwtechinfo.bmwgroup.com/sib_attachments/2017-BMW-MY2007-2011-Exx-Fxx-PCV-Valve-Heater.pdf

But thankfully only seems to affect 2007 and onwards cars. As my 330i is a 2005 I'm keeping my fingers crossed, and an extinguisher in the boot!

Apparently the following recall was issued for pretty much all N52-operating models:

https://www.motor1.com/news/572522/bmw-recall-fire-risk-pcv/?fbclid=IwAR25s9En5dGfTcQRIGCM-92qIlFRVuF_lkM-g1HOTGiMyAWtGrbQ-dp_Yzk

Similar to an older recall for just the 2006 models of the Z4, listed under 19V-273.

Anyone got any further information on this?

I've seen the same article, can't seem to find anything on BMW recall page or the DVLA

I’ve just sent a recall check request to the local dealer. They should let me know within a day.

Isn't this something that affects only cars with 'cold weather spec' or something?
Feel sure it's been mentioned before on here and declared as irrelevant to UK and similar markets. Or am I thinking of something else?

"Basis for recall population determination:
All vehicles from Start-of-Production to End-of-Production manufactured with a specific engine and PCV valve heater configuration.
"This issue involves the Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) valve heater (“blow-by-heater”) which is designed to prevent the engine’s PCV valve from freezing. The electrical contacts of the PCV valve heater are coated with a plastic material. Irregularities in the manufacturing process could allow moisture to occur near the PCV valve heater and lead to a short circuit."

Just got a message back: my car isn't subject to any recall at the time. However they'd check on the issued recall in the US and whether that impacts my car as well or not. TBC...

Contacted my local BMW dealer today, pointing towards the US recall. They’ve informed my they’ve checked with BMW, and that I’m not subject to the recall. For reference: I’ve got an E86 Si built in September 2006

This will be interesting to find out if it is the case

What a sh!tshow.
Nathan breaks it down for anyone concerned. I think anyone with an original BMW part PCV heater needs to be concerned, wherever they're located.

I believe my uk car suffered from this. I've copied a link to an old post of mine. BMW took my car away, gave me a 3 series courtesy car, investigated the issue and then agreed to replace and fix the damaged parts (whilst not admitting fault).

What symptoms were you getting that made you take the car in? I’m assuming there wasn’t any fire?
Rob

Hello Rob,

There was a small flame which I was alerted to by smoke coming from the engine bay. Luckily I had just started the car and was able to put it out quickly. Called AA and he asked me to start the engine again and the same thing happened which he put out with squeezy water bottle.

I started to question whether I had any warning signs beforehand and I feel like there could have been a faint smell in the cabin whilst travelling that day but not sure if this was me imagining it after the event. If I did, it certainly wasn't alarming enough to stop or investigate.

This recall is on 1 series, i bought a58 plate 125i vert 3 months ago and the recall flagged up,so in it went to the bmw dealer, sorted.

That certainly makes for worrisome reading… Given the risk, any indication of the costs of the parts involved? Might as well include it on the preventive list

Issue a recall due to risk of fire from the PCV heater, in order to replace the same part (with same part number) just to risk the same occurrence of failure/fire at some point in the future?
The logic of that eludes me somewhat.
:?
As I said, what a sh!tshow.

Well, recalls usually have nothing to do with safety and everything with a*s-covering. But that doesn’t sell well these days…
