Passenger Window problem

I have done a search but can't find what I am looking for.

Basically my passenger window has got stuck up. I pressed the one touch down and it went all the way down, there was a loud crunch and the window returned to fully closed. After this the window would not move at all, however I can hear the motor running when pressing the up/down button. It's as if the window has disconnected from the motor.

The roof still goes up and down but no window movement and also the window does not adjust when the door is opened and closed.

Any ideas what this might be and how to fix it?

Thanks

Sounds like your window regulator has failed... do a search on window regulator and you should find various threads.

Definitely sounds like Windows regulator. That's exactly what happened with mine. You can buy kits off eBay and do it yourself, altho I think it's a little fiddly. I'm no where near competent (being a girl) and got my local indy to replace it. Cost me about £170 :)

Yep window regulator definitely. Plenty of threads about it. You can do it yourself with a bit of know how or you can get a dealer/indie to do it for about £200.

Like they said 'window regulator' mechanism rather than a motor. Despite being quite handy my previous experience with trying to replace frame-less windows/mechanisms has ended in a world of fiddling, trying to adjust and correctly reset them so I paid a local garage to do it. Again about £150 - 170 from memory?

Thanks guys. Will check if its covered under warranty from the local dealer I bought it from and if not will go to a local indie.

Am I ok to wash the car still or is it likely to leak?

Out of interest what are the chances of this being covered under warranty from a local independent dealer?? I'm thinking slim!!

New cable only cost £25 and can be easy replaced at home

The problem is I'm pretty rubbish at DIY especially when it comes to cars. How easy of a job is this and is there a how-to with pics?

So far I have had 2 quotes from the 5 indie's I have contacted:

£247 inc parts, labour and VAT
£229-259 for parts and labour, VAT not included

Was hoping this might be a bit cheaper than this. Anyone recommend anywhere in Essex to get quotes?

if you don't mind driving to Crawley ,i could swap the cable for £50 .

This is what you need to buy if you up for it .

I don't mean any offense by this but would rather have it done by a garage, that way I have a fall back if anything goes wrong.

If an indie says the part comes as a whole and not just the cable, do you think I should suggest I can get the cable only and see what they say?

Anyone help with this? Do you think an indie will do it if I supply the cable?

You can only ask and see what they say. :)

Looking like a no-go to be honest. One local specialist said they would not get involved with that as the regulator is a notorious problem and they would recommend replacing the whole unit.

Trying other indie's now.

Well I had my window regulator replaced yesterday by my local BMW specialist. All works fine again which is good. The only problem is I now have the airbag light on. I have rung them and they said to pop it in and they will reset it for me.

From what I have read that is unlikely to fix it, is that right? I am going there Saturday so want to be "armed" with some knowledge if required.

Thanks
