Painting/decorating - my rights

To be honest, I personally wouldn't be giving him a penny until the job is completed to your satisfaction. It's his mess and he needs to sort it out.

Hmmm :? "Don't pay anything until happy "
How does it work at your garage ?
Does the customer get to try the car out before they hand over the cash ?
I doubt it & in the past ive had enough poor repairs carried out that id paid for on handover of my keys to find on the way home all was not right
I love how this thread has lynched the contractor from the off  100% confirming my decision never to work for joe public

I would hope with any public facing business that their motto is the "customer is always right"

Tim.

Oh yeah  but you know full well that in many circumstances they aren't ( not implying this is the case with Ruby of course )
As we have seen by the OP the biggest problem is misinterpretation of what is or isn't included in a costing along with misinterpretation of what standard is acceptable for agreed price . from there on its a downhill slope with no winners

I supplied & fitted kitchens for the best part of 10 years, all of my work was on recommendation, zero advertising. I took a deposit upon booking, the balance for the materials & appliances upon their delivery to the customers house, and the "fitting fee" upon completion, and only when the job was finished, and the customer 100% happy. In that time, I have never had monies withheld, and if extra work became necessary, as it occasionally does with any additional building or electrical works, it was always discussed and costed with the customer, and never undertaken without their agreement.

We fix them correctly or they don't leave the garage.. We don't do half measures or poor quality work..
Never give the customer cause for complaint and always exceed what the customer expects ..

Its what I was brought up with and has always continued ..

I was merely trying to highlight that in life whenever joe public is involved there will always be circumstances where someone is not happy with the standard of work yet the person who carried it out is convinced its been done correctly  goes with the territory with so many goons occupying a small island

But surely not in Ruby's case

If the details are correct then the standard of work sounds shocking
Sounds more like a hobbyist has been practicing rather than a professional earning his money..

Feeling quite relieved that we have reached an amicable compromise with the main contractor. He's agreed to get his other decorator to fix the paint job and leave off the cost of us getting someone else to re-do the paper (recent quote we got for the lot was £800). He is also going to leave off the price of us buying another 8 rolls of paper and more paint. We are quite happy with that and actually he is a really nice bloke to be fair. We'll pay up when its all done. Phew. I've certainly learnt a lot about this stuff in the past few weeks and thank you everyone here for your input

That's a very good outcome Ruby and I'm glad it's been resolved amicably, nothing worse than having a nasty stand off, it brings nothing but stress and anxiety. You can breathe easy and have a good weekend.

Looks like it's going the right way, just a pity it wasn't done correctly first time and saved you all the hassle .
You have done well keeping your cool, not many would have.

Sorry to hear of your issues, sadly I'd say you haven't any recourse on the cost now, however dont pay until you are happy with the work. It should look professional nit diy as that's what you paid for. As for the paper being"hard to work with". He should have warned you at the out set- plus I'd say it's bollocks as I've just done our bedroom with Laura Ashley and it was no harder than other papers and I'm cack handed!
